We are looking for a fearless leader who has 5-7 years’ experience, demonstrating increased responsibilities and a proven record of accomplishment of developing prospects, cultivating relationships, implementing annual campaigns and prior involvement in a capital campaign, as well as organizing and running successful fundraising events.  This individual will be an integral part of the Senior Leadership Team and reports directly to the President & CEO.  The Director of Development will have a results-oriented, driven attitude and fresh approach to fundraising and problem solving, with the ability to inspire, relate and engage staff of all levels members, and donors.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for the strategic planning, goal setting, coordination, and management of all aspects of the association’s fundraising efforts, including the design of a well-rounded fundraising plan that includes donor and market research, prospect identification, annual appeals, capital campaigns, planned giving, grant research, proposal writing, fundraising communications, supervision and coordination of all YMCA fundraising collateral materials.  The Director of Development will also position the WSYMCA as a “charity of choice” for the investment of donations within the local community. 
  • Develop plan for fund development that aligns with the WSYMCA strategic and business plan. 
  • Educate, motivate and energize the board and staff to work together and collaborate as a team to improve fundraising efforts.
  • Ensure 100% of board and full time staff contribute to the annual campaign and increase the number of part time staff giving.
  • Support the future of the WSYMCA though an emphasis on developing a broader donor and volunteer base by identifying, informing, and cultivating potential new donors.
  • Increase member donor participation.
  • Ensure donor retention through a comprehensive donor information system and through donor recognition/appreciation programs.
  • Identify and secure corporate sponsorship of select programs.
  • Lead all facets of the delivery of at least 4 intimate, grassroots cultivation events.
  • Provide for internal controls to ensure the integrity of donor relationships, timely donor acknowledgements, accountability of donor restricted gifts, stock transfers, etc.
  • Prepare and manage annual development budget; responsible for optimum utilization of expenditures, and accountable for cost controls.
  • Develop proposals for grants from government sources and private foundations.
  • Work to embrace, include and manage alumni groups to support specific affinity areas as part of overall WSY. (Camp Frank A. Day, Chickami, other day camps, swim team, past members and program participants).
  • Provide leadership in supervising and evaluating support staff job performance.  Ensure that staff receive appropriate fund development, communications and marketing education, tools, and training.
  • Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote program and/or membership growth.
  • Manage and provide strategic direction for all special events and activities that are philanthropic in nature. Deliver and grow current events that include annual golf tournament, road race, Gala.
  • Provide the leadership and vision to deploy new technology and marketing techniques to expand the reach of campaigns. (Crowdfunding, personal pages, web campaigns, SMS giving).
  • Create a suite of dashboard reports with support from finance and membership departments that provides accurate and timely snapshot of status of all development efforts. (# volunteers, number of gifts, number of member donors, gift categories etc.) Provides data and reports as required.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required; direct experience may be considered in lieu of formal academic preparation.
Skills/Experience: 

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Five to seven years’ experience in proven diverse fundraising efforts, preferably for a mission-based non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, develop and "close" individual relationships, and clear evidence of ability to close gifts.
  • Experience working with a non-profit Board of Directors and other volunteers.
  • Proven results in planning, research, and data analysis skills with ability to write grant proposals.
  • Dynamic personality with ability to inspire and relate to others including staff of all levels and all segments of membership.

 Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Superior interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate effectively with people at all levels both internal and external to WSYMCA.
  • Exceptional writing and presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate to a diverse population.
  • Familiarity with comprehensive fundraising functions and regulations.
  • Demonstrated management skills, with the ability to mentor, coach and supervise staff.
  • A results-oriented focus, a driven attitude and an entrepreneurial, fresh approach to fundraising and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and competence with standard computer tools associated with business, marketing and project management and fundraising and donor management software.
  • Ability to develop and manage departmental and project budgets.
  • YMCA Multi-team/Branch Leader certification desirable.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire.
