Director, Education and Workforce Department, US Business Unit

As part of FHI 360’s US Programs unit, the Education and Workforce Department designs and manages comprehensive educational reform initiatives; college and career readiness initiatives for underrepresented youth; innovative curriculum development and implementation on critical education topic areas, including STEM and financial literacy; community school initiatives to provide needed wraparound services for students in disadvantaged communities; workplace skills development programs for underrepresented youth, including youth who are transitioning from incarceration; and initiatives to guide workforce policy development in an era of profound technological disruptions. Services provided by the department include technical assistance, capacity building, professional development, curriculum and tool development, model and program development, research and evaluation, and social marketing and communication. The department is comprised of two teams: Education and the National Institute for Work and Learning.

The Director of Education and Workforce leads the department’s work in defining and implementing the department’s vision, mission, and objectives; serves on the US Business Unit’s Leadership Team and provides input to the Business Unit Director on critical Unit issues; and leads the planning and implementation of cross-departmental collaborative activities in support of FHI 360’s strategic initiative to promote equity in the United States. The director supervises the department’s two team leaders, as well as its management staff. The director will be responsible for developing and strengthening partnerships with potential funders and collaborators in relevant fields; ensuring the quality of department efforts; effectively communicating departmental project results to internal and external partners; and functioning as a thought leader in the US education and workforce development fields through presentations, writings, and meetings.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and implement strategies for achieving technical results beyond the boundaries of individual projects, ensure program management, and provide for external advocacy and technical leadership related to attaining stated Department goals.
  • Lead development, planning, and assessment of new program activity, structuring and management of current program and project responsibilities, planning for long- and short-term development activities, and the regular contact and liaison with all key clients and funders supporting the work of the Department.
  • Lead efforts to raise new funds for the Department.
  • Oversee project financial management, as well as executive and administrative staffing of the Department, to meet the demands of each program and project.
  • Prepare and monitor annual budgets for the Department and its projects, ensure that the Department budget target for the year is met or exceeded, that project budgets are balanced with no losses, and personnel and systems are in place for managing, monitoring, and reporting finances.
  • Maintain the quality of staff in the Department, including training and staff development, so that there is overall professional development growth and opportunity for job satisfaction, and long-term professional growth of employees.
  • Guide efforts to communicate internally and externally about the work and impact of the department.
  • Influence the fields of education and workforce development and enhance the reputation of FHI 360 and the Education and Workforce Department, through thought leadership activities.
  • Supervise and support Program Directors within the Department.
  • Participate in US Business Unit Leadership Team meetings and provide input to US Business Unit Director on critical issues.
  • Lead a cross-Unit workgroup charged with defining and implementing the Business Unit’s agenda for enhancing its efforts to promote equity in the United States.
  • Collaborate with business unit director and other Department directors in leadership and management of cross-Department and cross-unit initiatives, and in development, strategic planning, and review of programs.
Educational Background: 
At least a Master’s degree in education, social science, public policy or a related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 12 years of project management experience
  • In-depth knowledge of the technical issues related to the Department’s work.
  • Demonstrated skills in strategic planning; program development and business development; initiative development, leadership and management; quality assurance; financial and operations management; and talent/leadership development of other managers and staff.
  • Expertise in research and evaluation; technical assistance, professional development, and leadership development; policy development and advocacy.
  • Expertise in issues related to promoting equity in the United States.
  • Demonstrated initiative in risk taking and innovation.
  • Demonstrated experience in multi-sector project management and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing complex projects that are strategic in nature and national in scope.
  • Ability to collaborate across practice areas and departments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Our preference is to base this position in either FHI350’s New York City or Washington DC office.
