The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Associate Director, NY Committee to focus on fundraising and outreach events in the New York area. This full-time position is based in the New York office and will report to the Senior Director, New York and the Midwest, in the Development and Outreach Department.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Manage and oversee fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events in New York including the annual $1.9M Voices for Justice dinner, briefings, and private dinners and receptions;
- Manage all aspects of New York Committee communications and initiatives, including advocacy, outreach and fundraising projects;
- Work with the Senior Director to develop, implement and maintain a strategic plan in conjunction with the Executive Committee;
- Lead regular check-ins with the Co-Chairs of the Committee, and work with them to plan and execute Committee initiatives;
- Research, identify, cultivate, service and solicit new prospects, existing donors, and New York Committee members;
- Identify areas of interest for our community with regard to HRW’s work in an effort to adopt a more proactive and strategic approach to events;
- Oversee event logistics including branding elements, materials, merchandise strategy, and follow-up;
- Work with the Senior Director to build, cultivate and steward an active pipeline of Leadership-level donors and prospects;
- Work with the Senior Director to build and carry out strategy around donor trips; Maintain invitation lists and tracking mechanisms;
- Create and track donor lists, fundraising reports, and office and event expenses; Regularly monitor the budget and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;
- Supervise the NY Committee Associate and Officer and liaise with event consultants;
- Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;
- Deliver output in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development and Outreach department; and
- Perform other responsibilities as may be required.
Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree in international relations, film, journalism, social sciences, or related studies is required. An advanced degree in human rights, communications/marketing, or philanthropy is desirable.
Skills/Experience:
- A minimum of five years of fundraising and management experience is required.
- Ability to effectively build relationships and engage with a variety of donors, committee members, and board members is required.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English are required.
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
- Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work well under pressure are required.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are highly desirable.
- Strong computer skills are required. Experience with donor databases and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
- An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly desirable.
