Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a Development Associate to provide administrative and clerical assistance to its Development and Outreach Department. The position supports the organization’s leadership gifts program and strategic development initiatives. The Associate reports to the Director of Americas Initiatives based in Seattle and works closely with the Senior Director of Americas Initiatives based in New York.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supporting donor relationship management for the Americas Initiatives team through the coordination of donor communications including sending impact updates, inviting donors to calls/events, and drafting messages;
  • Liaising with Development Operation on financial reporting for team;
  • Liaise between Americas Initiatives team and Direct Marketing team;
  • Coordinate all year-end and fiscal year-end solicitations for team;
  • Draft and edit pledge, gift, and meeting acknowledgment letters or other correspondence;
  • Update Raiser’s Edge database records with pledges, call reports, research profiles, and other data;
  • Monitor and coordinate internal organization-wide communication on relevant donors and prospects;
  • Schedule internal and external meetings, arrange travel, prepare expense reports, file, print, and prepare donor mailings;
  • Conduct web-based prospect research;
  • Retrieve and respond to internal and external requests for information;
  • Coordinate the recruiting, hiring, and training of interns as necessary; and
  • Carrying out other duties as required.
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s degree in international relations, journalism, social sciences, or related studies is required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience is required.
  • Experience building and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written communication skills in English are required.
  • Prospect research or other research experience is required.
  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge and donor databases is highly desirable.
  • Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  • Meticulous attention to detail is required.
  • Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
  • Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team is required.
  • Strong interest in international human rights is required.
  • Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at $47,436. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days vacation per year.
