Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) Government Relations division is seeking a dynamic and effective State Policy Specialist. Reporting to the Director of State Policy and Advocacy, the State Policy Specialist will assist in the day-to-day work to impact the ever-changing state legislative landscape with the goal of supporting patients’ ability to access comprehensive reproductive health services. The State Policy Specialist will provide technical assistance and project management support for the state legislative work of the Government Relations team. The Government Relations team develops and implements national and state strategies for improved public policy, including federal lobbying, federal administrative advocacy, state public policy initiatives, and support for affiliates. Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) Government Relations division is seeking a dynamic and effective State Policy Specialist. Reporting to the Director of State Policy and Advocacy, the State Policy Specialist will assist in the day-to-day work to impact the ever-changing state legislative landscape with the goal of supporting patients’ ability to access comprehensive reproductive health services. The State Policy Specialist will provide technical assistance and project management support for the state legislative work of the Government Relations team. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Tracks key state legislation related to expanding ability to access comprehensive reproductive health care.
- Provides overview of bills impacting expanding access to reproductive health care.
- Aids in drafting reports to give snapshot and analysis of proactive state legislative landscape and trends.
- Works directly and swiftly with organizing, communications and digital to provide support and project management of proactive legislative campaigns.
- Writes and edits memos, fact sheets, backgrounders, policy briefs, talking points, and presentations on relevant legislative trends, bills, and session overviews.
- Conducts policy research using State Net, Westlaw, various legislative databases and the internet.
- Verifies accuracy of communications statements when escalated by editorial review.
- Assists the Director and Government Relations department with managing special projects.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 3-5 years of directly related, progressively responsible program and policy experience.
- Strong computer skills including word processing, Google Chrome, database, spreadsheet and use of the internet.
- Experience in state policy focused on sexual and reproductive health issues.
- Basic understanding of state legislative landscape.
- Demonstrated understanding of reproductive health issues.
- Basic understanding of state legislative landscape.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication and customer service skills.
- Able to work independently, under pressure, prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of diverse groups, working with multicultural workforce and sensitivity and appreciation of cultural differences.
