NRDC seeks an experienced development professional to join the Foundation Relations team and achieve results as a member of the organization’s Development Department. The overarching responsibility of the Portfolio Manager, New York is to support planning and execution of fundraising strategies designed to meet or exceed the Foundation Relations team’s annual revenue goal. ($35+ million for FY18.)
As lead staff for a portfolio of mostly East Coast-based foundation donors, the Portfolio Manager, New York will lead efforts to make and execute plans for cultivating and strengthening relationships with foundation staff and advisors; prepare and submit funding requests, and manage the grants to NRDC which result from these efforts.
The ideal candidate will be one with a personal commitment to environmental advocacy, significant experience working in a high-volume foundations fundraising capacity, and an ability to craft fundraising communications in clear and compelling language.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the interests and expectations of the organization’s major foundation funders; develop strategic relationships and an in-depth understanding of the funding priorities of current and prospective donors in the East Coast foundation funders’ portfolio.
- Digest and remain up-to-date on information from a variety of sources about NRDC’s various areas of program work.
- Write fundraising materials, including narrative proposals and reports, program updates and other correspondence, utilizing a variety of styles ranging from the highly technical to the more personal.
- Prepare financial documents to accompany fundraising materials, including project budgets and expense reports.
- Continuously evaluate the giving patterns of current and prospective foundation donors as assigned in order to contribute to the development and updating of the team’s foundation funding landscape analysis, and cultivation/engagement plans.
- Write/revise foundation profiles, key constituent biographies and interaction histories for briefings and other donor engagement activities.
- Seek and coordinate inputs from other NRDC staff, especially development, finance and program colleagues, to ensure timely completion of workplan assignments.
- Help ensure maintenance of consistent and coherent records across all Development systems.
- Develop proficiency and consistently use designated systems for tracking donor interactions and results.

Qualifications:
- 5+ years’ experience (or equivalent) in foundation fundraising
- Superior writing skills and demonstrated ability to develop proposals, reports, and other communications materials typical for large institutional foundation funders
- Strong analytical skills and experience in preparing project budgets and financial reports
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Collegial team player able to work well with diverse internal and external constituencies
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively and manage multiple deadlines
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to make judgment calls in a variety of situations
- Knowledge of environmental issues and environmental foundation donors a plus
- Windows and Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and database software proficiency
- Strong commitment to environmental advocacy
