Director, Corporate Relations & Major Gifts

Executes against a region-based strategy for corporate account management, including the pursuit of new opportunities, directly managing and cultivating relationships, region implementation of corporate initiatives and driving account engagement to achieve ACS mission priorities and significant income targets.   Responsible for development and management of a major gifts portfolio within assigned territory developed through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of effective relationships with volunteers, board members, corporate leaders, foundations, current and prospective donors.  Through effective portfolio management, qualifies and secures funding from donors capable of giving $10k+ and ensures donor retention upgrade strategies are successfully executed.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Executes against a region strategy for corporate engagement, focused on renewing/enhancing previous engagement and developing new relationships with target corporations to achieve revenue and mission targets
  • Serves as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of priority corporations, corporate foundations, CEOs, C-Suite executives and other high impact individuals with responsibility for prospect research, recruitment, cultivation, and retention
  • Secure a minimum of $300,000 - $1,000,000+ in major gifts in first year.
  • Secure a minimum of $300,000 - $1,000,000+ in corporate partners funding in first year.
  • Identifies opportunity and facilitates the development of high impact alliances and partnerships for the Society and among our corporate and distinguished partners
  • Ensures engagement and mobilization of diverse constituents, staff and volunteers in a prioritized and coordinated way to meet established goals.
  • Build relationships with volunteers, board members, corporate representatives, foundations and current and prospective donors toward qualifying and building a caseload of donors; leverages volunteers and corporate partners as door openers and relationship builders to achieve income and mission goals
  • Manage a portfolio of 75 – 150 donors. Create and execute a moves management plan for each qualified donor in portfolio
  • Create and submit monthly reports as required to management that accurately reflect caseload activity and performance.
  • Partners with region account operations and enterprise support functions to ensure successful corporate program execution, including tracking, planning, implementation and continuous performance feedback.
  • Builds strong relationships and directly collaborates with staff within the Distinguished Partners team to leverage external affiliations and accomplish shared goals.
  • Work with the market leadership, program, and communications team to secure appropriate project information, including budgets and program content, to create proposals and execute solicitations
  • Collaborates with the Community Development, Cancer Control, Business Planning & Operations, Communications/Marketing and ACS CAN staff to ensure coordinated and interdependent achievement of region goals
  • Supports ACS CAN strategies by leveraging corporate and foundation relationships.
  • Monitors and fosters behavior that establishes a culture that values the staff/volunteer partnership, and is consistent with the values, goals and objectives of the Society to create an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, accountability, empowerment, and dedication to the mission
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combined experience:
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ year proven track record of securing $100,000+ gifts, AND 3-5+ years’ experience developing corporate engagement, fundraising, and executive relationship development with distinguished partners, preferably with a multi-million dollar organization
  • AFP Membership/Training; Sales training, and experience with Veritus and planned giving software is preferred.Some travel will be required.

Other Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required
  • Must be a proactive self-starter with the ability to work as a team with limited direct/local supervision
  • Successful track record of securing 6, 7, and 8 figure gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.
  • Strong working knowledge of the major gifts area; campaign experience preferred
  • Strong sales background and knowledge of product marketing/sales concepts.
  • Strong financial acumen.
  • The ability to be an ambassador for the American Cancer Society.
  • Ability to understand work within a complex organizational structure.
  • Established ability to drive lead generation, build and cultivate relationships, and influence strategies and techniques for high level corporate executives, community leaders, high net worth individuals, and diverse constituents.
  • Outcome driven with ability to respond to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Ability to manage and motivate groups and establish effective working relationships with individuals with external partners, volunteers, and ACS staff
  • Broad knowledge of the overall structure, programs, and services of the American Cancer Society including policies and procedures.
  • Remains composed under stress, handles responses to criticism tactfully and delivers on organizational commitments.
  • Ability to analyze and integrate information from relevant sources.
  • Proficient in computer-based information systems.
  • Excellent project management, planning, and organization skills.
  • Strong strategic planning skills.
