The Philanthropy Writer writes and edits a variety of communication materials designed for the major and principal gifts donor audience through the entire donor cycle.  These materials may include appeals and acknowledgments, letters of inquiry and proposals, publications, donor communications and stewardship reports. They may also include as needed selected marketing materials.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Philanthropy Writer writes and edits a variety of communication materials that educate and inform the major donor audience and further fundraising goals.  S/he provides editorial advice and expertise, oversees team/cross-departmental communication efforts, and works with outside writers and related vendors.  S/he builds relationships with and solicits corporate and foundation funder that align with The Nature Conservancy’s mission. His/her written products may include board presentations, annual reports, executive-level speeches, high level donor profiles, acknowledgment letters, campaign brochures, funding proposals, fact sheets, and presentations as well as marketing materials as needed. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Manages and implements projects.
  • Works across departments and represent TNC’s work in an accurate and compelling style.
  • Responsible and accountable for meeting assigned project goals and objectives.
  • May serve as team lead on assigned communication and / or marketing initiatives.
  • Assists in marketing pieces as needed.
  • Does not supervise staff but will coordinate the work of peers and writing- and communication-related vendors.
  • Resolves issues independently within program area.
  • Works independently without requiring detailed management review of general work.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience writing or editing one or more of the following:  newsletter, magazine, annual report, web-site articles/stories, donor profiles, presidential acknowledgment letters, campaign brochures, funding proposals, fact sheets, presentations, or equivalent.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization or development a plus.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Experience implementing and measuring communication and engagement plans/strategies. 
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices. 
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in relevant discipline.
  • Experience leading or managing projects.
