Save the Children partners with schools, communities, and state governments to deliver programs and mobilize resources that increase Kindergarten readiness and grade-level proficiency among children in rural America. The State Director is a senior field leadership position, responsible for achieving Save the Children’s strategic program, advocacy and operational goals in California and Washington state. The Director will oversee a remote-based team, managing performance, planning, and overall business operations. Working in close collaboration with Save the Children headquarter staff, the Director will increase state-level brand visibility, strategic partnerships and funding for our direct implementation and partner-delivered programs and community-based initiatives. The State Director will ultimately drive program growth and sustainability by advancing Save the Children’s state policy and advocacy agenda.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Leadership and Representation: 30%

  • Increase the visibility of Save the Children’s work in CA and WA – represent Save the Children to opinion leaders and high level officials
  • Establish and maintain relationships with State officials, donors and strategic partners  
  • Develop and execute a state-based media strategy, in partnership with communications team, to increase program visibility and credibility of Save the Children in the states
  • Serve as a spokesperson with media and at state events; establish state media relationships
  • Host site visits for donors/VIPs

Management and Operational Excellence: 30%

  • Lead development and management of state-level annual budget and plan; submit periodic reports and status updates on achievements and challenges
  • Oversee implementation of all sources of funding to ensure donor compliance and efficient use of resources; ensure effective management of sub-grants and direct implementation sources
  • Build and maintain a high performing team – participate in the development of organizational design and staffing plan; lead recruitment efforts for state-based staff; promote staff learning and development goals
  • Oversee implementation of child safeguarding protocols and effective application of policies and procedures.
  • Work with national Gift In Kind (GIK) colleagues to increase the receipt and use of GIK resources (books, shoes, athletic equipment, etc..) within CA and WA

Public and Private Fundraising: 20%

  • Drive the development and implementation of a CA and WA focused private funding strategy and pipeline in partnership with fundraising and advocacy colleagues
  • Identify competitive grants and partnering opportunities locally in coordination with division- and agency-level fundraising teams
  • Raise incremental funds from local corporations, foundations and individuals; secure Gifts-in-Kind in partnership with fundraising colleagues
  • Maintain and grow relationships critical to the expansion of Save the Children’s direct implementation portfolio of ASES-funded work in CA

Policy and Advocacy: 15%

  • Advance USPA’s Policy and Advocacy goals at the State level
  • Collaborate with Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) to support broader mobilization efforts and coordinate activities when possible
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with state-level policy makers and lobbyists
  • Track and follow-through on legislative activities and opportunities, and regularly update senior leadership regarding progress  
  • Communicate advocacy efforts with key parties (i.e. Media, DOE, State legislator, etc.) within state

Emergency Response: 5%

  • Ensure state team is prepared to support an emergency response to a local disaster
  • Collaborate with State disaster response teams to implement strategies and support emergency responses as needed in CA and WA
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 7-10 years in nonprofit or similar work focused on education, early childhood, out of school time learning, or related field
  • Strong leadership, staff management and business operations skills
  • Experience directing a large and complex grant portfolio
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across levels and locations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to travel regionally and nationally approximately 25% of the time
  • Established track record of cultivating partnerships; has existing network of relationships among funders, partners and policy makers in CA and/or WA
  • Comfort working with high-level donors, board members, legislators and other VIP

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge and experience working with child-focused organizations in CA and/or WA e.g. Department of Education, First Five, Local Schools, etc..
  • Experience with media relations and/or serving a spokesperson
  • Experience managing remote-based staff
