Sr Manager, Relay For Life

Provides staff leadership, coaching, mentoring, support and training for a team of Relay For Life event execution staff in an assigned area. Accountability for significant income targets, as well as event-related mission and advocacy activities. Ensures goal achievement through the effective leadership and management of diverse staff, and the engagement, empowerment and mobilization of event volunteers.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Accountable for the achievement of income performance targets for Relay For Life for an assigned area.
  • Manages, coaches, trains, mentors and develops a team of Relay For Life event execution staff directing the execution of multiple Relay For Life events.
  • Provides necessary hands on training, coaching, mentoring and support with a focus on community organization and relationship building skills; supports key teams/volunteer recruitment and relationship management.
  • Identifies and executes strategies to implement best practices that result in growth of event revenue in alignment with income plans; drives and encourages creativity and innovation.
  • Instills community volunteer leadership development skills; facilitates identification and development of new volunteer leaders as well as focusing on volunteer retention.
  • Demonstrates and models effective behavior in community assessment, relationship building and talent identification and development.
  • Provides leadership and planning guidance for the engagement of the community in Relay For Life to drive increased event participation – committees, teams, team members, sponsors and survivor/caregiver - including Relay Recess and Field Day, High School Coaches vs. Cancer, and other Relay feeder events.
  • Works in partnership with Health Systems for achievement of identified event-related mission goals, including enterprise-wide initiatives; provides staff support to deliver mission/cancer control messaging and within assigned Relay For Life communities and key constituents.
  • Partners with community, health system, and corporate & distinguished partnership staff to determine execution plans for meeting objectives for the Relay For Life community presence and engagement for the area.
  • Collaborates with Corporate & Distinguished Partners and Health Systems staff to maximize event success; identifies and communicates opportunities to engage constituents from corporate, distinguished partners and health systems activities in existing and future events.
  • Partners with enterprise support functions and ensures appropriate support is provided for successful execution of events.
  • Ensures events are supported in the event of staff or volunteer vacancy. Closely monitors volunteer and staff resources; requests contingency support as needed, and triage resources appropriately.
  • Utilizes and responds to customer satisfaction survey, comparative event and success factors data.
  • Monitors progress against objectives; adjusts plans and manages contingency efforts and resources as required.
  • Engages in annual budgeting and forecasting activities. Ensures compliance with ACS policies, including employment, risk management, event and cash handling, and financial controls.
  • Works in partnership with ACS CAN, including efforts to increase ACS CAN membership.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Two years of experience with staff management and team leadership preferred. Three years fundraising experience preferred.
  • Understanding of and ability to present articulately the full spectrum of ACS program offerings.
  • Able to cultivate relationships with targeted constituents including a diverse population of community leaders and volunteers.
  • Proven ability to recruit and manage to successful results through volunteers.
  • Strong market, community and constituent perspective.
  • Ability to understand and work within a complex organizational structure.
  • Outcome driven with ability to respond to changing circumstances and priorities; strong project management ability.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Broad knowledge of the overall structure, programs, and services of the American Cancer Society including policies and procedures.
  • Remains composed under stress; handles responses to criticism tactfully and delivers on organizational commitments.
  • Demonstrated success managing entry-level staff in fundraising roles.
  • Ability to analyze and integrate information from relevant sources.
  • Able to generate accurate income projections.
  • Ability to proactively monitor and adjust activities to respond to changing circumstances and priorities to meet goals.
  • Strong strategic planning skills.
  • Able to work through others to accomplish goals.
  • Proficient in computer-based information systems.
  • Must have access to car or be able to transport materials to and from meetings and special events/programs. Must be able to staff evening and weekend committee meetings, events and programs. Must be able to staff Friday and Saturday overnight Relay and other events, and remain onsite for the duration of the event. Must be able to lift 30 lbs and perform set up /take down of event equipment.
