As Custodian, the position ensures safe, healthy facilities that meet all local, state, and Federal regulations is crucial to the operation of a Head Start/Early Head Start, (HS/EHS), program. The Custodian position is responsible for ensuring clean, safe, and functional facilities by performing cleaning and building maintenance duties, as well as some repair activities, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting when professional licensing is not required.
As Bus Driver the position provides regular transportation services for Head Start / Early Head Start children while following the safest and most efficient routes, obeying all applicable laws, Head Start/Early Head Start regulations and Department of Transportation, (DOT), regulations, maintaining route schedules, and reporting all concerns to supervisor and relevant family services staff. Responsibilities also include regular bus maintenance, including vehicular fluid levels, essential maintenance paperwork, safety checklist, and the reporting of damage/malfunctions to supervisor, as participating bus safety drills. The Bus Driver ensures internal and external vehicular cleanliness, recordkeeping, damage/malfunction reporting, safety equipment/seat belt maintenance, bus entry/exit monitoring, educational/social interaction with children, and communication with parents/families as needed. Additional responsibilities may include acting as a custodial, kitchen, and disabilities aide, and supporting program operations as necessary
As a front line representative of Save the Children the position holder is required to ensure the safety and security of children and families that he/she come in contact with and represent the agency values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity and Integrity.
- Collects information and participates in planning for upgrading and minor repairs of facilities.
- Acquires knowledge of federal, state and local safety and building code requirements related to Head Start/Early Head Start facilities within first month on the job, including, but not restricted to, OSHA and MSDS chemical inventory, “Right to Know” training, etc.
- Cleans assigned facilities on a daily basis and ensures that facilities are clean and free of hazards.
- Cleans classrooms, hallways, floors, bathrooms, kitchens, offices, entrances, etc.
- Performs routine maintenance such as replacing light bulbs and maintaining equipment used in the program work.
- Reports safety, sanitation, and fire hazards to supervisor and/or staff person in charge of facilities.
- Performs routine maintenance of buildings and grounds during program breaks and more often as needed.
- Performs and/or facilitates outdoor tasks such as snow removal, sweeping steps, porches and drives, maintaining parking lots, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and trees, raking gravel or leaves, clearing parking areas, etc.
- Maintains cooperative relationships with fellow employees, building staff, supervisor, administrators, students and general public.
- Performs minor plumbing, painting, carpentry, some electrical repairs and general repair work in assigned facilities, where a professional license is not required.
- Participates in job-related meetings when requested, such as center Safety Committees.
- Takes precautions to protect own health and safety as well as the health and safety of children, families and staff and to protect equipment and facilities.
- Participates in “Right to know” training and informs supervisor if MSDS sheets need to be replaced or added.
- Provides regular transportation services for Head Start children while following the safest and most efficient routes;

- Perform bus safety drills.

- Perform bus entry/exit monitoring;
- Ensure educational/social interaction with children, and communication with parents/families as needed.
- Current in-state Commercial Driver’s License (with a School Bus and/or Passenger endorsement);
- Acceptable and good driving record required;
- Must be insurable by Save the Children’s insurance carrier;
- Knowledge of basic operations, tools, and terms used in building maintenance work including plumbing, painting, and other light facility maintenance, ability to operate light trucks, equipment for minor construction, and standard cleaning appliances such as vacuum cleaners, rug shampoo machines, etc.
- Knowledge of Federal, state, and local safety, and building code requirements, knowledge of safe and thorough basic cleaning and sanitation practices, expected to be knowledgeable of the regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination, ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 5-10 pounds constantly, performing such activities as sitting, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping. This also includes some duties that require repetitive action and motion skills, keyboarding and computer use.
