Development & Outreach (Americas Initiatives Events) Intern

This job is no longer available

Miami, FL, USA
Full-time

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an intern for the Miami office for the fall 2018 and spring 2019 semesters. Ideally the intern will be available beginning in October 2018 through December 2018, with the possibility to extend through the spring 2019 semester. The student will intern closely with the Americas Initiatives team and will build skills in event planning, fundraising, and information tracking. This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization.

Internships are unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • This internship will primarily focus on event planning for the Miami Voices for Justice Annual Dinner.
  • The Voices for Justice Annual Dinner is a fundraising event held in 23 cities worldwide that gathers supporters to celebrate important human rights achievements.
  • Interns will contribute to event planning, producing print materials, contacting guests and suppliers, maintaining the RSVP lists in a database, liaising with volunteers during the event, and other assignments as the opportunity arises.
  • Other projects may be assigned as they arise such as planning smaller private or public events, writing donor profiles, conducting press reviews, creating communication documents, and updating the Miami contact database with influencers and donors.
Educational Background:
The intern must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship term.
Skills/Experience:
  • Applicants should be detail-oriented, well-organized, self-motivated and reliable.
  • Candidates with a demonstrated strong interest in human rights and relevant coursework are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Fluency in Spanish is desirable.
  • Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential.
  • Database experience and familiarity with Raiser’s Edge or other databases are desirable.
