The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for an Executive Director in Memphis, TN .

The Executive Director is responsible for developing and executing an overall market plan that achieves transformational growth in revenue, community impact operations and volunteerism, ensuring the implementation of effective programs and processes in community service, education, development, and communications. Incumbent effectively leads the market plan implementation through an integrated staff and volunteer team in tandem with external stakeholders and partners to achieve stated goals. Provides leadership through the recruitment, engagement and utilization of an inclusive Board of Directors that reflects the demographics of the market and the competencies needed to ensure the success of the community plan and goals of the AHA. Serves as the face of the American Heart Association by building a network and being engaged in visible key community organizations that are mutually beneficial for driving AHA’s brand, mission and priorities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Leads and oversees planning and execution of fundraising activities in assigned area in accordance with best practices and Senior Leadership Team set regional goals and ensures the success of each event. Provides management expertise, coaching, and monitoring for fundraising events, including Heart Walk, Heart Ball, GRFW (Go Red For Women), Workplace Giving, Life Is Why We Give, Cause and related events (as applicable) to ensure the aggressive growth of events and focused attention by staff year-round
  • Oversees and manages operations to ensure the overall campaign goals are achieved
  • Oversees achievement of AHA’s health impact goal(s). Provides strategic vision and leadership in planning, execution, monitoring and on-going evaluation of the health impact being made in the market in alignment with the priorities of the AHA and the corresponding community plan
  • Actively partners with board and/or ELT (Executive Leadership Team) committees to ensure that participants are knowledgeable, engaged and committed to the AHA and its priorities and have an opportunity to make a difference
  • Participates in the sourcing of top quality staff and volunteers who are corporate and community leaders, reflective of the AHA priorities and community demographics
  • Develops strategic plan for volunteer and staff successor management
  • Monitors the financial activities, income and expenditures, of the assigned area
  • Oversees local communications directors to ensure optimum levels of support and coverage for all activities and initiatives
  • Ensures appropriate and timely record management including computerized donor record management and follow-up
  • Partners and maintains relationships with community health organizations to ensure integration and collaboration with cultural health initiatives, quality improvement initiatives, heart and stroke initiatives and advocacy
  • Ensures integration and collaboration with the Mission Advancement Team along with staff in other markets to maximize donor contribution and sponsorship potential and impact
  • Utilizes volunteer committee(s) to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of events
  • Conducts field visits with volunteers and attends all ELT orientations and majority of ELT meetings
  • Supports and ensures execution of National and Regional policies, procedures, standards, benchmarks, best practices and guidelines
  • Ensures the integrity and security of donor information and adheres to the Special Event Cash Handling policies
  • Utilizes effective management techniques in the selection, supervision, monitoring, training and counseling of staff to achieve organizational objectives. Creates and maintains a professional work environment that fosters and values collaboration, trust, teamwork, empowerment, professionalism and diversity
  • Effectively supervises and coaches staff in accordance with applicable policies, practices and employment laws
  • Other duties and projects may be assigned to the role, which provide general assistance as needed to support the mission of the American Heart Association
Educational Background: 
BA or BS degree or equivalent in experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising principles, practices, techniques and current trends
  • Experience in event planning, organizing, consultation, and volunteer management
  • Ability to recruit, manage and evaluate high level volunteers for appropriate utilization
  • Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication, including large and small group presentations, group facilitation and training
  • Ability to organize and prioritize large events and multiple projects
  • Ability to read, comprehend and analyze number goals and fundraising reports
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout assigned geographical territory and to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Ability to use relevant tools (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail and database programs and voice mail)
  • Community Health, Advocacy, Marketing and Communications experience

Required Experience:

  • 4-6 years’ work experience, preferably in special event fund raising with a voluntary health agency or related field
