The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a DIRECTOR OF MULTICULTURAL INITIATIVES based out of the AHA’s MEMPHIS, TN office. The primary focus will be related to implementing targeted multicultural initiatives and executing against defined business priorities that support the Multicultural Markets strategic plan. Through extensive volunteer/community engagement and activation, this position will lead the integration of health equity strategies with development, advocacy, marketing and communications while serving as the internal consultant to the assigned region on initiatives to build diversity and inclusiveness.

The DIRECTOR OF MULTICULTURAL INITIATIVES will develop and implement a robust market plan to build health equity and address social determinates of health based on the association's health impact and engagement goals for cardiovascular health, including strategies for eliminating health disparities and improving cultural competency. The MCI Director will position the American Heart Association as a trusted partner to external customers and serve as the primary contact for executing against diversity-related initiatives for the territory covered. External customers include faith-based entities, urban housing facilities and strategic partners (such as HBCU, fraternities/sororities and civic organizations).

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in health education, education, health administration, public health, business or related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • Competency in oral and written communication.
  • Previous experience working with metrics, and defined goals and outcomes
  • Previous experience with developing, creating or implementing business plans or strategic plans
  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience in each of the following areas: minority public health education, community programs and outreach related to health issues, including disparities across multiple acculturation levels and socio-economic groups; expertise in health equity platform; marketing and development outreach; and building alliances with community stakeholder groups.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in volunteer recruitment and management to drive health impact and development goals
  • Solid track record in recruiting, engaging and developing volunteers across disciplines.
  • Ability to influence and engage key strategic alliances, professional volunteers, and funding partners to implement new concepts, and ideas, that will impact the social determinants of health in key communities.
  • Proactively participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment and manage large projects ensuring deadline compliance with minimal supervision
  • Possess effective interpersonal, negotiation, and communications skills (oral & written), with the ability to manage multiple priorities, while meeting both team, and organizational deadlines.
  • Ability to multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment collaborating daily with management, and staff from various teams
  • Ability to work, as needed, outside standard business hours. Travel within your assigned territory which includes some overnight travel for business appointments, meetings, and engagements.
