Serves as a member of the President/CEO’s senior leadership team, providing strategic guidance in financial development to advance the YMCA’s mission through the Annual Giving Campaign, Capital Campaigns, government and foundation grants, and endowment bequests and gifts. Assists the CEO in developing an actively engaged fundraising volunteer Board of Directors, and in positioning the YMCA as a “charity of choice” for the investment of donations within the local community. Leads staff and volunteers to institutionalize philanthropy and fund development within the YMCA.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Provides vital input in short and long-term strategic and operational planning and positioning within the association.
- Directs and coordinates association Annual Campaign, Capital Campaign and endowment programs working closely with consultants as needed. Develops appropriate fundraising policies and procedures for the association.
- Serves as lead staff to assigned committees of the Board of Directors. Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.
- Develops processes and is actively involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects including grants from government sources and private foundations.
- Helps develop a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the association that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers.
- Develops systems and manages resources needed to carry out the fundraising plans. Establishes and monitors the financial development department budget for the association.
- Tracks all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides reports as needed working closely with Executive Assistant.
- Provides training and overall leadership in fund raising. Educates, motivates and provides feedback to branch leadership related to best practices in the fundraising process. Designs educational programs in fund development for staff and volunteers; participates as teacher and facilitator. Pursues formal and informal education for self and others.
- Develops communication plans to insure members, participants, and the community understand the case for support. May plan and direct the marketing and communication plan; may plan and oversee the association Annual Meeting, Annual Reports, newsletters and brochures.
- May supervise other department heads as needed for strategic alignment.
Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent; Master’s degree preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Eight or more years of professional development experience in the YMCA and/or other not-for-profit or higher education organizations preferred.
- Established relationships and knowledge of top community leaders, local and State officials.
- Knowledge and experience in the following areas is required: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, research and cultivation practices, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal/grant writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail, and, development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting. The individual is also expected to have demonstrated experience and success in asking people to contribute time and money.
- Ability to create interpretive materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission.
- Knowledge of the media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs.
- Foundation and government grant writing expertise.
- CFRE or equivalent preferred; YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
Compensation/Benefits:
$125,000.00 - $155,000.00
