The Alzheimer's Association provides a variety of education, information and support services to persons with dementia, their families, health care professionals, and the general community. The Community Coordinator for volunteers and outreach is responsible for coordinating and monitoring volunteer educators to provide educational programs in the community, support and assist individuals with dementia and their families, and work within the professional health care community to encourage better diagnosis, care planning and quality care provision. This role also supports other departments to promote all the services of the chapter

Areas of Responsibility: 

Advancing Care and Support

  • Recruits, trains and manages volunteers to provide educational programs to families, persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and related diseases, health care professionals and community organizations. 
  • Recruits, trains and manages volunteers to provide support groups to caregivers and/or persons with dementia 
  • Conducts outreach and education and builds working relationships with health care providers, organizations, service providers, diverse populations and other stakeholders who collaborate on Association initiatives.
  • Uses established resources and protocol to respond to and provide information, referrals and care consultations for persons living with dementia and families. 
  • Represents the Chapter at appropriate and assigned meetings. 
  • Presents opportunities to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association through promotion of volunteer positions and other organizational initiatives. 
  • Works to assure timely and effective promotion and marketing of educational support services and programs in assigned service area to meet goals of the strategic plan.
  • Remains knowledgeable of current information and research related to Alzheimer’s and related diseases as well as national, state, and local initiatives that affect the targeted population.

Operational Effectiveness

  • Works with necessary chapter and home office staff to assure that requirements for grant-funded programs and services in the assigned territory are met.
  • Maintains accurate records of program and event participation to support strategic plan
  • Submits timely and accurate data entry and reports as necessary
  • Collaborates with team members on initiatives as requested to support the strategic plan.
  • Able to manage volunteer-led education and support group program through recruitment, training, engagement, supervision and evaluation of volunteers to meet goals of the strategic plan as well as redirection or dissolution of volunteer duties/partnership when necessary and per Association protocol
Educational Background: 
Degree in related field of health care, gerontology, human services
Skills/Experience: 
  • Prior experience in volunteer management
  • Prior experience in health care field guiding, coaching, and supporting individuals and their families
  • Demonstrated success in talent acquisition, performance development and goal achievement
  • Demonstrated success managing volunteer-led community education programs with experience in recruitment, training, engagement, supervision and evaluation of volunteers
  • Prior experience with dementia and disease process, options for caregiver interventions, and community resources
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, volunteers, staff, and external contacts to build and maintain strong relationships
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, implement and evaluate program initiatives
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; strong public speaking skills
  • Ability to listen effectively and demonstrate good decision-making skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel, Power Point and Google applications
  • Ability to learn new systems related to job function
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy and initiative
  • Must be willing to travel, mostly day trips, throughout the Greater Kentucky, Southern IN chapter area
  • Must show a valid driver’s license with proof of insurance and willingness to use personal vehicle in the course of employment

Working Conditions:

  • Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. 
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours to fulfill work requirements, including multiple weekends during Walk season
  • Workload will fluctuate with varying deadlines and priorities
  • Work may be conducted in a variety of environments, including office and public meeting spaces
  • Ability to operate designated office equipment
