The Chief Impact Officer is new position created within Metro United Way’s senior executive team to create greater alignment, strategic focus, shared measurement, and accelerated impact across our areas of work and investment within the community.  They will have to build new ways of linking and maximizing our work and investments across Early Childhood and Youth Success, Financial Stability/Economic Mobility, and Healthy Lives to create lasting solutions that move individuals and families from need to independence.  The Chief Impact Officer will provide executive leadership, strategy development, planning, execution, and accountability for Metro United Way’s Community Impact activities.  

Success requires a commitment to high functioning partnerships with all areas of the organization including donor relations, operations, data analytics, marketing, and volunteer engagement.  The Chief Impact Officer must exhibit a professional presence and encourage collaboration at all levels of the organization and across the community.  As with all senior MUW positions, success requires demonstrating a commitment to being data informed in developing and executing strategies, with clear metrics and outcomes identified.

This position provides prominent leadership in developing, promoting and maintaining solid community collaborations with corporations, foundations, school systems, United Way agencies, other non-profits, and state, federal and local government partners.  Successful candidates must have the professional presence and depth and breadth of experience to credibly represent MUW and our community partners, both locally and nationally.  

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Chief Impact Officer is responsible for the executive leadership of Metro United Way’s Community Impact department which includes:

  • Executive oversight of:
    • Early Care and Education programs, including our leadership of the Ready 4 K Alliance, the Excellence Academies, and the ASQ program; supported by the VP of Early Care and Education.  
    • Youth Success and Out of School Time initiatives, including the BLOCS partnership; supported by the OST/Youth Success Team.
    • Financial Stability/ Economic Mobility initiatives, including the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program; supported Sr. Manager for Family Stability  
    • Basic Needs and Health strategy initiatives, including 2-1-1. 
  • Provides executive direction and management of all allocations, fund distribution processes and community investment strategies as they align with the goals and strategies of MUW.
  • Manage all agency relationships, including but not limited to, agency certification, alignment, evaluation, capacity building and partnerships.
  • Establish and periodically review, in cooperation with the President and CEO, Board of Directors and the senior leadership team, strategies and initiatives designed to meet MUW’s community goals. 
  • Using available data, develop strategies that align Community Impact products with the interests of donors.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field both inside and outside the MUW network.
  • Represent MUW at external events, advocating on our behalf while educating stakeholders about community needs and solutions. 
  • Provide professional support and leadership for various committees including the Community Impact Cabinet. 
  • Leads, directs and supervises assigned staff (~20 people in total with ~5 Direct Reports) by recruiting, developing and coaching the staff to create a motivated, high performing team that can reach the strategic goals and objectives of Metro United Way.
Educational Background: 
Master’s degree in business administration, philanthropy, social work or related field preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least a minimum of five years’ senior executive leadership and management experience in a large non-profit, corporation, or similar organization with a level of complexity and visibility consistent with Metro United Way.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  
  • Ability to budget and forecast expenses and make tradeoffs to meet the needs of the organization and community.   
  • Respectfully provide dissenting views and create an environment where others are also encouraged to do so. 
  • Contribute to the broader leadership of the organization through active participation as a member of the senior leadership team.  
  • Unquestionable integrity with the ability to represent MUW credibly, professionally, and with a strategic senior leader vision. 
  • Proven success navigating and leading cross-functional/cross-community partnerships to elevate partner and organization efforts.
  • Expertise in developing complex logic models and program evaluation frameworks.
