Context: Plans and implements all aspects of major gift fundraising to support the mission and programs of the Sierra Club.

Scope: The Managing Director of Major Gifts is responsible for direct fundraising efforts focusing on the procurement of gifts of $100,000 or greater.  Coordinates with and involves Sierra Club Program staff, regional and chapter leaders, and activists in the major gift fundraising process.  Enhances the major gift fundraising collective team success by performing special project assignments.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Plans and organizes donor identification strategies.  Engages fundraising volunteers to assist in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift prospects including high net worth individuals and foundations.
  • Makes solicitation/cultivation calls on donors and prospective donors. 
  • Maintains knowledge and expertise in environmental issues, the Sierra Club's priorities and concerns.  Helps to identify and develop funding opportunities.
  • Plans and implements regional donor and volunteer events and staffs committee meetings as necessary.
  • Coordinates closely with the other fundraising efforts in the Western Region including work being done by another Managing Director of Major Gifts, Advancement Directors and Associate Advancement Director. 
  • Facilitates the participation of Program staff and activist leadership in prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation, and provides assistance to Program planning activities that are major gift fundraising related.
  • Develops and implements Fundraising Plans for the region in collaboration with other Advancement Directors, conducts and monitors fundraising efforts, sets priorities for future activities, and regularly reports progress to supervisor and relevant volunteer leadership. 
  • In coordination with the other Advancement Directors focusing on Western Region fundraising, plans, monitors, and updates the budget of the Regional Fundraising Plans.  Evaluates and coordinates resources needed to carry out the Regional Plans.
  • Supervises staff, assigns work and establishes priorities, provides guidance and direction, monitors fundraising performance, conducts performance evaluations and provides ongoing feedback, effectively recommends hiring, firing, salary and promotion decisions and provides training and development.
  • Performs assigned project duties as directed, which may include one or more constituency-based assignments, such as the attainment of funding for a particular Sierra Club program, campaign, or initiative, or outreach to a particular donor constituency. 
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3 – 5 years' experience in development and major gift fundraising, including a strong background in personal solicitation and use of volunteers in fundraising efforts.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and ability to meet personal solicitation fundraising goals.  Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with colleagues in a complex organization.
  • Proven record of effective work with volunteers: organization, training, motivation, and coordination.
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with environmental issues.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • 20% travel required.
