The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking highly-qualified candidates for the position of Associate in its London office to provide assistance to the team. The London office serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in the UK. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week and requires availability to work occasional night and weekend events. The Associate reports to the UK Director of Development and Outreach, based in London.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work closely with the Assistant to provide administrative support to the Director, including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, recording and processing divisional finances, processing mail, and making travel arrangements; 
  • Assist with prospect and donor cultivation and stewardship with London Committee members and other supporters by coordinating correspondence, contacting donors, scheduling and preparing for donor meetings, tracking communication, and preparing donor/prospect research and meeting briefings; 
  • Provide event support for annual dinners, receptions, committee meetings, briefings, and other events throughout the year by coordinating vendors, timelines, invitations, RSVPs, event materials, and venue details; 
  • Work closely with the Assistant to maintain the Raiser's Edge donor databases by updating records and information, processing gifts from all UK donors, generating financial reports, lists and queries, updating information, overseeing data entry for special events, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data, and overseeing data adherence to the General Data Protection Regulation;
  • Identify opportunities for improvement of efficiencies of systems and processes for the Development and Outreach team in London; 
  • Together with the Director, manage all aspects of income and revenue generation for Development and Outreach in London, including tracking and recording leadership gifts and leadership prospects and regular reporting on income generation and capturing revenue for events and donations; 
  • Together with the Director, manage all aspects of the London Development and Outreach expense budget including tracking and monitoring of expenses; 
  • Support the annual Gift Aid audit and submission to HM Revenue and Customs; 
  • Support and monitor communications with the Finance Division on all queries relating to gifts; 
  • Prepare, draft, edit, format and/or distribute correspondence, documents and other materials, including web content for the UK website, the regular London community newsletter and other relevant social media; 
  • Recruit, onboard, and assist with the supervision of interns, and assist with recruiting and hiring of other staff, as needed; 
  • Support the strategy, cultivation, stewardship and communication with the “next generation” community in London; and
  • Carry out other duties as required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, or a related field is required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.
  • Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences, including donors are required. 
  • Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required. 
  • Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally are required. 
  • Strong analytical skills and the natural curiosity and creativity needed to conduct online research are required.
  • Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  • Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required; experience with Raiser’s Edge or other donor databases is desirable.
  • Experience with event planning, community engagement, and/or philanthropy is preferred.
  • Strong interest in human rights is desirable.
