Works collaboratively in a fast paced and demanding environment with staff, volunteers, members, chapters, the Retired Teachers Association divisions (RTA), and other AARP divisions to achieve AARP’s legislative, social impact, communications, and member value goals in the state. Responsible for developing a presence in communities by enhancing volunteer capacity, building community partnerships, delivering AARP programs and activities, and outreach to AARP members and increasing visibility with state, federal, and local lawmakers and executives. Develops strong volunteer teams and engages volunteers in community outreach, key relationship building with relevant local leaders, partners, grassroots activities, educational forums, and advocacy support. Works with staff and volunteers to deepen AARP’s reach and impact in multicultural communities. Leads programmatic campaigns statewide in an integrated way with other state office colleagues. Works to engage members and volunteers from diverse communities in the activities of the organization. Fully engages volunteers in AARP state plan activities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serves as a member of the state team for the development and implementation of systems for effectively involving volunteers in all aspects of AARP’s work with chapters, units, external organizations, academic and business communities, and policy makers.  Develops and implements volunteer teams and roles related to activities that advance AARP’s strategic and legislative priorities. 
  • Works to develop volunteer leaders and to recruit, match, orient, train, and support volunteers. Creates and implements formal volunteer recognition plans. Provides technical assistance in the areas of meeting planning, communications, skill development, etc.  Participates in training volunteers on priority issues, strategies, policies, and state specific initiatives and communications processes focusing on volunteer leadership development.
  • Expands awareness of AARP and our priorities among community and public policy leaders. Leverages volunteers as the primary community-level “Face of AARP” and makes presentations at workshops and conferences, as appropriate. Identifies and positions AARP as a critical voice for age-eligible individuals, but also demonstrates relevance to all generations. Works with volunteer teams to manage and coordinate opportunities with public-speaking venues and other high profile venues, in collaboration with the Communications team.
  • Builds effective grassroots and key contacts capacity within the state to enable effective communication and impact on elected national and state officials representing the region.
  • Engages members, volunteers, and chapters in grassroots, community outreach, communications and advocacy activities in support of the AARP state plan. Organizes and maintains visible and effective coalitions and partnerships dealing with volunteer engagement, social impact, advocacy, and member value strategic activities.
  • Works in collaboration with state colleagues and national office staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues, priorities, programs, and activities. As appropriate, facilitates interaction and communication with national office partners and regional advisors to request technical assistance and ensure that the proper resources are available for staff and volunteers, including programmatic content, talking points, updates, and briefing materials.
  • Enhances AARP’s reputation among non-traditional partners, including community leaders, businesses, educators, and policy makers. Initiates new relationships and sustains existing ones.
  • Develops and strengthens relationships with state-level multicultural organizations and supports staff and volunteers with community-level organizations.
  • Effectively manages Association resources and processes to advance the state plan. Develops, manages, and administers regional and/or function-specific budgets.
  • Assist in transportation, setup and breakdown of meeting materials, displays and other items needed to conduct successful meetings and events.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Human Resources, and/or Non-Profit Management, Social or Human Sciences, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • A​ minumum of 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team to facilitate collaboration and innovation.
  • Experience in community engagement.
  • Experience in working with and managing of volunteers.
  • Ability to handle multiple issues and projects in a matrix team approach, requiring consultation and collaboration with state colleagues. 
  • Willingness to adapt and embrace new technology. 
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze and adjust strategies and tactics in an ongoing, fast paced environment.
  • Some travel required.
  • Some night and weekend hours as required to meet state office needs.
  • Ability to lift and transport 30 pounds.
