The Community Engagement Practitioner facilitate technical and consultative processes with local communities and partners in pilot sites for the effective implementation of TNC’s Sustainable Artisanal Fisheries strategy in Peru. This a fixed-term position for two years.
The Community Engagement Practitioner facilitate the implementation of the community-based fisheries management in pilot site. Strengthen the relationship with local partners and build trust. The practitioner also keep track on the implementation and support the monitoring of objectives and goals of pilot projects. Participate in discussions about artisanal fisheries management in Peru and support the productions of reports/publications of lessons learnt from pilot sites.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Support the design and implementation of the sustainable artisanal fisheries strategy in Peru.
- Maintain effective communication between the Conservancy and partners in the field (including fishing communities).
- Facilitate/support the implementation of community-based fisheries management in pilot sites, including but not limited to facilitating processes related to:
- Monitoring and data gathering activities (e.g.; landing recording, etc.).
- Design of fisheries management plans.
- Capacity building activities.
- Build/strengthen relationships and trust with partners from pilot sites.
- Support the organization of donor and partners visit to pilot sites.
- May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Gather and analyze data to produce lessons learnt.
- Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, supervising contracts with vendors, assisting with budget development.
- May work under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Experience in fieldwork and interest of working with artisanal fishers.
- Knowledge on project planning, monitoring and evaluation.
- Ability to explain conservation practices to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
- Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in Spanish and English.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 – 2 years related experience in community-based fisheries management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in marine biodiversity conservation and fisheries management or similar field.
- Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Must have a valid driver's license.
