Perform day-to-day cell bank operations. This includes: i) preservation, sterility, handling, and preparing for distribution of cell material, including stem cells, primary cells and engineered cell lines; ii) preparation, cultivation, QC, and banking of primary cells from lung tissue and nasal scrapings; iii) good record keeping.

Essential Functions: (These represent those duties that must be performed in the job)

  • Hands-on involvement in CFFT Lab primary cell bank.Critical work includes the dissection of lung tissues to procure primary human bronchial epithelial cells; isolation of human nasal epithelial cells; expansion through cell culture of isolated epithelial cells; isolation, expansion of primary cell material from rectal biopsies; cryopreservation of cell banks, and quality control testing of cell banks.
  • Support work to primary cell banking lab including maintenance of cell banking equipment and cell stock integrity.Other examples include preparation of media and media components, cleaning of processing areas, and inventory of reagents and supplies.
  • Expected to conduct work in compliance with established protocols, procedures and regulatory requirements. This includes adherence to SOPs for: i) primary cell isolation/expansion, and preservation; ii) other critical cell culture work; iii) established QC procedures and good laboratory practices.
  • Participation in drafting procedures, SOPs and forms, when required.
  • Expected to be available on call, weekends, and after hours, as needed, for tissue/cell culture activities.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in national Great Strides Walk and related events organized by the Foundation to help people with CF.
Educational Background: 
B.S. degree in life sciences or related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 0-2+ years of experience in mammalian cell tissue culture. Strong preference to candidates with experience with aseptic technique and/or tissue dissection.
  • Ability to follow directions, both written and verbal, to complete complex laboratory processing steps.
  • Competence to efficiently handle multiple tasks, prioritize and organize workflows to ensure timely and accurate work.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Organizing skills and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel and Access plus software for scientific data processing and plotting.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to Research Scientist/Group Leader Cell & Tissue Culture.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Frequent weekend and holiday work in the lab to maintain cell/tissue cultures.
  • Shared 24/7 on call status with cell bank team for incoming tissue.
  • Use of computer required.
  • Sitting, bending, reaching, walking, and chemical use for sterility cleaning of lab.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (not to exceed 50 lbs).
  • Once or twice a year travel to scientific meetings or collaborating labs.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to meetings or events at different locations.
