Communications and Marketing Director

This new opportunity is ideal for a creative and agile Communications and Marketing professional to advance our lifesaving mission across a region that includes Las Vegas, Northern Nevada and the North Bay.

In this role, you will be responsible for implementing marketing, communications, social media and public relations through:

  • Raising our profile via traditional and digital media positioning, including graphic design and video production
  • Crafting comprehensive and distinctive marketing campaigns that exceed customer expectations
  • Elevating our brand and visibility as an engaged community partner
  • Deftly collaborating with internal and external partners to achieve objectives within timelines and budget
Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Design and implement plans, including cause sponsorship activation, and serve as a trusted consultant to staff and volunteers.
  • Seek, cultivate and maintain regional media relationships with traditional and emerging media.
  • Execute social media plans and campaigns and stay informed of the latest trends
  • Develop and implement media events.
  • Research and prepare media and background materials to support public policy issues.
  • Pitch “big picture” stories focusing on hard news and research.
  • Develop media materials and other tools to inform key audiences about heart and brain health.
  • Assist with crisis communications and sensitive issues on an as-needed basis.
  • Recruit, train and develop volunteers to represent the AHA in media opportunities and for compelling human-interest stories.
  • Partner with volunteer leadership, senior management, division staff, news media, outside organizations and the general public in representing the AHA and growing the flow of news and other information to the media with the overall goal of supporting and impacting our strategic priorities.
  • Maintain the integrity of the brand and identity of the organization.
Educational Background: 
5 years or more experience in the communications, public relations, marketing or journalism field and undergraduate degree in related field

Those qualities are core to success along with:

  • Knowledge of a variety of mass and alternative media, and principles of journalism including researching, interviewing, writing and editing
  • Command of the fundamentals of multiple disciplines including the principles and ethics of public relations, promotion, marketing, business communication, planning and budgeting
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills (i.e. news, business and persuasive writing, and one-on-one and group communication)
  • Ability to simultaneously lead multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time pressure with minimal supervision
  • Strong negotiation, collaboration, time management, organization and interpersonal skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel as necessary within the assigned territory and work evenings/weekends as needed, including occasional overnight business trips

Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

  • Experience with the AHA or similar nonprofit organization
  • Basic video, graphic design and photography skills
  • Cause-level sponsorship activation experience
  • Volunteer recruitment and management
