Key member of the Head Start Team guiding the program to provide early childhood health services and education to the children and families we serve. Monitors and implements comprehensive health, dental, environmental safety and nutrition programs for children and their families. Works with families to provide education on the importance of Well Child Check Ups and preventative practices.
Our Head Start and Early Head Start programs provide services to support the diverse needs of our families and focus on school readiness for children six-weeks old through pre-kindergarten. This includes an enrollment of around 400 children at five locations in Clay, Platte, and Jackson counties.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Monitors the ongoing health status and needs of enrolled children by ensuring completion of health checks, incident reports, administering of medications, implementation of the program's short-term exclusion and readmission policy and other procedures.
- Monitors nutritional assessment data for each child and participates in Individual Family Conferences (IFC) to support centers and families on documented special dietary requirements.
- Identifies health, dental, emergency and nutrition service resources within the community; ensures all these services are communicated with Family Advocates; and helps parents in securing a source of accessible health care for their families.
- Monitors that all enrolled children are up-to-date on a schedule of age appropriate preventive and primary health care.
- Works collaboratively with Family Advocates and families to arrange any needed medical, dental, or nutritional examinations and immunizations.
- Monitors that children have medical and dental homes, while working to ensure families are educated on why that is important.
- Develops written health, environmental safety, sanitation, food service and emergency policies and procedures ensuring compliance with local and state regulations, with appropriate participation and approval. Ensures these policies and procedures are carried out including scheduling required drills, conducting required safety checks and monitoring all other provisions.
- Collaborates with team members to ensure that Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines are being followed and assists associates with providing age appropriate classroom nutrition activities.
- Monitors classrooms to ensure that foods are an integral part of the total education program; that mealtime atmosphere is condusive to socialization and development, that meals are served family style; and, that the quality, quantity, and size of food served is appropriate to the ages of the children.
- Facilitates trainings for associates and families related to the following topics (but not limited to): Medication Administration, Health and Nutrition Policies and Procedures, Safe Sleep, Shaken Baby and Head Trauma, First Aid and CPR certification, CACFP, Healthy Eating and Physical Activity.
- Main point of contact for the Y Healthy Eating and Physical Activity initiative and I am Moving I am Learning for Head Start.
- Participates in the grantee’s Health Services Advisory Committee.
- Maintains detailed, accurate, up-to-date and confidential records including: child health files, health services tracking system and documentation of all activities; develops and submits timely reports of component service provision and activities as required.
- Facilitates the transition of children with incomplete medical/dental treatment or with ongoing medical needs to services at their next destination, per the delegate's transition plan and with full participation of parents.
- Maintain a relationship with local Health Departments, Community Health Centers, Health Plans and other agencies to develop partnerships, provide resources for families and associates, and participate in family orientations, health screenings, and professional development trainings.
- Facilitate the planning of annual Healthy Universities and health screenings at all locations: work with centers on logistics and work with community providers to provide screenings and resources to families.
- Attends and participates in grantee-sponsored trainings, center pre-service and in-service trainings, and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities; keeps abreast of current health and nutrition industry best practices.
- Participates in the annual program self-evaluation and grantee monitoring, and complies with the program improvement plans developed. Contributes to the development of the Delegate Agency Annual Plan, program proposals and Community Assessment, as requested.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Skills/Experience:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or other medical certification.
- Three years’ experience in related area that includes one year experience in nursing or healthcare and nutrition, preferably in the field of pediatrics.
- Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
- Able to make independent and sound decisions in a fast paced environment.
- Able to exercise high levels of discretion and confidentiality.
- Detail oriented with good organizational skills, and be multi-task proficient.
- Strong computer skills with the ability to adapt to new software.
- Must maintain a current motor vehicle license and acceptable driving record that meets YMCA standards.
