350.org is looking for looking for a committed and passionate Senior Field Organiser to organise, mobilise and create a vibrant community of groups working on climate change campaigns across South Africa and South African society.

The South Africa Senior Field Organiser is responsible for organising and mobilising for 350.org in South Africa. This position will proactively seek out members of our target audience (individuals and organisations interested in working on climate change, and towards the 350.org strategic steer), and reactively respond to enquiries from the target audience. Supporting individuals to form groups, and for groups to take strategic climate action through keeping in regular contact with them, connecting them with each other, identifying and bringing about training opportunities and connecting them to resources. Success in this position would mean a vibrant community of groups working on climate change campaigns across South Africa and South African society.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategy and planning

  • Provide input and participate in the development and creation of strategies and plans for organizing work in South Africa.
  • Coordinate the implementation of strategies and plans, monitor and evaluate its progress, identify current and potential problems and seek appropriate solutions when necessary.  

Organising

  • Develop and test new ways of reaching potential organisers in South Africa.
  • Coordinate the work of potential organisers from 350Africa.org’s activities, both offline and online.
  • Respond to enquiries from people to 350Africa.org to get involved.
  • Provide advice and guidance to groups to grow and be more strategic and effective through:
    • Training
    • Access to resources
    • Mentoring
    • Regular communication
    • In person meetings
    • Working together

Mobilising

  • Coordinate offline events and groups’ involvement in these events.
  • Integrate groups into 350Africa.org campaigns.
  • Empower groups to support each other.
  • Provide advice and guidance to groups to hold their own events, and ensuring 350Africa.org is able to amplify them.

Training

  • Identify training opportunities for and from the groups.
  • Plan and implement these training with external trainers and experts, and where appropriate, lead trainings.
  • Contribute to global 350.org training and facilitation.

Networking

  • Participate in national and regional events and represent 350Africa.org at these events.
  • Form and manage relationships with individuals and organisations in the climate and energy sector in South Africa, as well as complimentary sectors.

Assisting the wider team

  • From time to time, work with the wider African and global teams on different projects.
  • Present our work, represent our perspectives and assist in the success of colleagues’ work.

Team management

  • Manage other South African organisers, and ensure own and direct reports work aligns with the broader African team’s strategy.
Skills/Experience: 

Personable with a high Emotional Intelligence

  • The role requires a significant amount of personal interaction both with 350.org staff, partners and members of the public. The organiser therefore needs to be outgoing and open, with an ability to judge personal situations and work towards the optimal outcome.
  • Skilled in conflict management and resolution

Training coordination

  • Ability to create training programs, using adult learning principles.
  • Able to implement training programs from logistics to identifying an appropriate trainer.

Event coordination

  • Organising campaign events, from protests and creative NVDAs (Non-Violent Direct Actions) to mobilising events to bring interested and active people together. 

Justice and Equity

  • ​Must embrace the principles of workplace justice, diversity and inclusion and apply them to day-to-day work. Must believe in and embrace 350.org’s vision, mission, and progressive values.

Organised and prioritisation

  • Organised, detail oriented and accurate. Able to create work plans and anticipate deadlines. Be comfortable juggling multiple priorities with competing deadlines. 

Self-Management

Non-essential knowledge, skills and abilities

Trainer

  • Run training for groups of people on topics relating to climate change and campaigning.

Required Qualifications

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in a similar organising role
  • Drivers licence as this role may be asked to drive a vehicle

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences 

  • Previous experience in a climate change or environment-related role
  • Demonstrable interest and passion for environmental justice 
  • Proficiency in Google Suites (Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive, etc), Slack and Zoom.

Work Environment

  • This position is based in our office in Johannesburg, but requires extensive domestic travel.
  • Organising and attending events, including protest actions.
  • Occasional international travel is required.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.
