The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Warrior Care Network® Intake Specialist I conducts mental health evaluations, triages warriors, and coordinates their referral to the most appropriate level care in specific intensive outpatient programs provided by the Academic Medical Centers (AMCs) within the Warrior Care Network® (WCN).

Note: Warrior Care Network® is a partnership between Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) and four national academic medical centers (AMC) of excellence. In cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this program connects thousands of warriors with world-class care to battle the invisible wounds of war by filling gaps in government care and reaching those who may otherwise go untreated.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Evaluate and conduct intakes either face-to-face or over the telephone and triage warriors in a timely manner.
  • Determine the most appropriate referral needed and coordinate warriors’ referral for placement to a specific intensive outpatient program provided by the Academic Medical Centers (AMCs).
  • Monitor the WCN queue to ensure warrior referrals are being answered, screened, and referred in a timely manner.
  • Process incoming and outgoing calls and referrals to AMC partners. Provide successful call life-cycle support including conducting follow-up calls with warriors and the AMCs.
  • Conduct non-clinical assessments to ensure warriors’ programmatic needs are met appropriately.
  • Collaborate with other WWP teammates to coordinate referrals to other WWP programs.
  • Coordinate with community referral sources to help provide appropriate level of warrior care.
  • Document data in WWP system of record, e.g., Salesforce, to ensure metrics are tracked properly.
  • Speak with alumni and alumni caregivers about the WCN program and answer their questions.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, clinical psychology, rehabilitation counseling, case management or related mental health field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct psychological diagnostic interviewing.
  • Demonstrated understanding of military and veteran issues, and the emotional impact of combat-related trauma, e.g., brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and combat stress.
  • Demonstrated understanding of psychological and mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges faced by warriors affected by trauma.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and build effective working relationships telephonically. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence. Ability to respond to sensitive matters with diplomacy and empathy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of relationship management and partnering. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional relationships and create a diverse network of resources, built on maintaining WWP’s strong supportive presence within the community.
  • Strong working understanding of WWP programs and other resources available for families and Warriors.
  • Demonstrated understanding of military culture.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Effectively complete assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • High energy level. Self-starter; willing to take initiative.

  • Four years of experience conducting psychological diagnostic interviews.
  • Four years of experience working with military or veterans’ population in support of their development and readjustment.
  • Two years of experience conducting intakes with individuals dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder or other mental health issues.
  • Two years of experience working with and providing support to wounded service members who are dealing with both visible and invisible injuries, e.g., brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and combat stress.

Preferences

  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, clinical psychology, or related mental health field.
  • Two years of experience in a mental health treatment setting providing diagnostic assessments, crisis screening, and psychosocial assessments.
