BLOOM Alliance Director

Reports to: BLOOM Alliance Executive Committee Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Job Summary
Alliance Managers are a rare breed: they must be equal parts diplomat, strategist, and orchestra conductor. This candidate must manage relationships and preserve trust between partner organizations. Additionally, he or she must maintain an overview of all relevant issues in Alliance activities and have the ability to work in unstructured and ambiguous environments. This role is the senior management position responsible for coordinating programmatic, operational, development and community outreach functions for the BLOOM Alliance. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Responsibilities:

Support BLOOM Advisory Committee, Executive Committee and Lead Team

  • Oversee the administrative and  staff support to the BLOOM Advisory Council, the Executive Committee, and Lead Team 
  • Prepare monthly meetings and capture notes for the Executive Committee
  • Signal when actions are needed to the Lead Team or Executive Committee

BLOOM Alliance Management and Leadership

  • In concert with the Executive Committee and Lead Team implement and refine the objectives, goals, and strategies which direct BLOOM Alliance activities 
  • Maintain an overview of all BLOOM Alliance relevant issues and activities  
  • Consult and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve BLOOM Alliance goals 
  • Schedule and facilitate BLOOM Alliance Executive Committee  and Lead Team meetings (face-to-face and virtual) to provide coordination and facilitate milestone performance discussions

BLOOM Alliance Fund Development 

  • Generate fundraising and development plan with input and support from the BLOOM Alliance Executive Committee to secure needed resources and funds to support BLOOM Alliance programs and activities
  • Work with BLOOM Alliance Executive Committee and Advisory Council to seek opportunities to leverage existing relationships  and investments to identify and obtain financial support from public and private resources
  • Plan, organize and implement fundraising events and other related activities with support from BLOOM Alliance Coordinator and BLOOM Alliance partner staff as needed

Community Engagement 

  • Represent the BLOOM Alliance on relevant committees, commissions, task forces, at special events, and boards
  • Assume leadership roles in professional networks and collaborations 
  • Assist with increasing the BLOOM Alliance’s visibility in the community

Communications

  • Assume primary responsibility for communicating progress and results to internal and external audiences by consolidating BLOOM Alliance program data and information about progress, achievements and outcomes 
  • Develop communication strategies and plans using all forms of media (social, online, print, electronic, etc.) 
  • Work in partnership with BLOOM Alliance partners’ marketing and communications staff to produce program information, fundraising collateral, and presentation materials for the general public, constituencies, stakeholders, funders and BLOOM Alliance partners

BLOOM Alliance Staff Hiring and Supervision

  • Oversee and coordinate the hiring process for the BLOOM Alliance Coordinator position
  • With final approval from the Executive Committee, hire the BLOOM Alliance Coordinator
  • Supervise, manage, and evaluate the BLOOM Alliance Coordinator.

Financial and Contract Management and Reporting

  • Liaise with fiscal agency (i.e. donor-advised fund at California Community Foundation)
  • Manage BLOOM Alliance budget and payments
  • Contract management and reporting for consultants and vendors

Plan and Implement Alliance Events

  • Plan and manage joint BLOOM in-person events
  • Plan and implement annual BLOOM retreat

Internal BLOOM Alliance Partner Coordination

  • Ensure coordination among alliance partner(s) on school expansion in LA County
  • Disseminate bi-weekly BLOOM Alliance progress reports for Lead Team and Project Teams
  • Project Team progress is reported out by the Alliance Director/Coordinator to the Lead Team and Executive Council

BLOOM Alliance Organizational Evaluation

  • Coordinate assessment efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of the BLOOM Alliance partnership
  • Develop a diagnostic assessment tool to evaluate the health of the BLOOM Alliance and the degree to which the BLOOM Alliance is meeting their strategic objectives
  • Conduct the BLOOM Alliance assessment on a semi-annual basis
  • Oversee and manage relationship with program evaluators

BLOOM Alliance Planning Process

  • Plan and implement annual BLOOM Alliance planning retreat 
  • Work with Executive Committee and Lead Team to design planning retreat desired objectives and outcomes, agenda, and presentation content
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s Degree, Or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience: 

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years development experience, including experience with prospecting and stewarding major individual and institutional donors and with managing large gift campaigns, preferably in the social justice sector
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • A dynamic personality and passion for supporting Boys and Young Men of Color
  • Must understand or have familiarity with social justice organizational mindset and experience with the nuances of progressive fundraising
  • The ability to quickly understand the complex concepts of BLOOM Alliance’s work  and to thoughtfully translate that work into presentations, proposals, appeals, and other collateral materials
  • Strong and well-tested project management skills (specifically for complex program and funding proposals)
  • Effective organization, time, and interpersonal management skills with a nimbleness to shift between projects as needs evolve
  • Ability to manage a development calendar and meet established deadlines
  • Experience working with and learning from a diverse community of strong, intelligent, and passionate team members
  • Comfort working with partners, board members and individuals with limited development experience, AND a range of partners from racially and economically diverse backgrounds
  • Sensitivity to and interest in diversity, equity and inclusion
  • A desire to support other team members to ensure the best work outcome
  • Strong emotional intelligence skills and an understanding of their own work style and strengths, with the desire to grow from constructive feedback
  • Experience instituting development processes and best practices as well as managing support staff
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google platforms (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Hangouts, etc.), as well as comfort learning new technology and systems
  • Experience working with development databases

  • Ability to take donors on tours 
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time and use computer
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds
