 This position is responsible for the operation of the Head Start/Early Head Start transportation program. Responsibilities include minor maintenance of the buses and other program vehicles ensuring all vehicles are kept clean and in safe repair at all times; and ensuring licenses, insurance, inspections, and other required permits are maintained to comply with all Federal, state, and local regulations, including the appropriate licensing of drivers.

 As a front line representative of Save the Children the Specialist of Transportation is required to ensure the safety and security of children and families that he/she comes in contact with adhering to the agency’s values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity, and Integrity. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Essential Duties 

  • Ensure proper and timely maintenance of all fleet assets, including preventative maintenance
  • Ensure safe operation of all fleet assets through policy and observation
  • Report any fleet asset that is non-functioning to Asset Manager
  • Ensure regulatory compliance of all buses, in accordance with OHS monitoring protocols (i.e. first aid kits, seat belt cutter, reverse beeper, etc.)
  • Ensure the proper installation and use of child restraints on school buses (i.e. car seats – proper size for age, weight and special needs of child, as well as, replacement/disposal of expired seats) 

Responsibilities and Impact 

  • Work with drivers to ensure safe vehicle practices including licensure and insurance require
  • Comply with established systems to monitoring the safety and cleanliness of all vehicle
  • Assists in preparation of driving routes and schedules.
  • Conduct regular checks on transportation procedures through ride alongs and other observations.
  • Maintain and ensure currency of all required driving records for all authorized drivers, including inspections, licenses, and contrac
  • Provide input into the hiring and training of drivers.
  • Requisition tools, equipment, and supplies as needed, ensuring budgetary contr
  • Works with Fiscal Coordinator to utilize the purchasing system to support transportation asset maintenance with equipment, supplies, repairs, and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Available on-call for emergencies.
  • Familiarity with Federal and state Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) rules and other local transportation regulations as applicable.
  • Responsible for understanding regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.
  • Determines and recommends training to meet the programs goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for understanding Head Start Performance Standards and local regulations.
Educational Background: 
A minimum of A.A. degree or related Vocational Degree/Certification [with directly related experience], B.A. degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of two to three years related experience and demonstrated knowledge of general transportation operation and vehicle maintenance required.
  • Must have reliable transportation, a current valid driver’s license and be insurable by Head Start insurance carrier.
  • Expected to be knowledgeable of the regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a system for accurate records.
  • Ability to work with contractors and volunteers effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Acceptable tuberculosis screening results, a clear criminal records check and a satisfactory initial health exam are required post-job offer and prior to employment.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish).
  • Knowledge of the purpose of the Head Start/Early Head Start Program.
