Position Overview The Director of Homeowner Services leads the development of Houston Habitat’s short and long term strategy to become a HUD certified counseling agency; to expand its operations in training and certifying families as “home buyer ready” and to develop a community of financial and real-estate resources to support the initiative. The incumbent is a highly visible, strategic advocate responsible for raising the profile of Houston Habitat’s expanded homeowner services and education programs in the Houston community. Job Responsibilities
- Leads the overall planning for creation, expansion and implementation of programs which educate and guide potential homeowners through the financial preparation and home acquisition process.
- Ensures department staff conducts effective orientation programs for all families interested in home ownership so they are familiar with the qualification process to become a homeowner or to know what steps to take to be certified as "home buyer ready”.
- Leads the initiative to certify Houston Habitat as a HUD certified counseling agency and to ensure adherence to the performance standards imposed by this governmental agency. Directs department efforts to work with HUD and other government agencies to properly administer programs in order to increase the amount of affordable housing available for low-income households in the Houston area.
- Leads the promotion of Houston Habitat’s programs to the market and community to attract potential homeowners into the application process.
- Leads the strategy to establish and expand outreach services to veterans, such as screening veterans seeking services, conducting program eligibility and assessment, identifying community resources, and providing information/referral services.
- Identifies and builds the network of community resources, such as realtors and financial professionals, to support Houston Habitat’s initiative to expand the ways families can become homeowners.
- Sets goals, monitors work, and evaluates results to ensure that the Homeowner Services department’s organizational objectives and operating requirements are achieved and are aligned with the strategic needs and mission of Houston Habitat as an organization.
- Works with community leaders, executive directors of other organizations, government officials, senior staff and board members to achieve the goals of Homeowner Services and to continue to open up channels of communication with neighborhood groups and organizations, as well as Habitat homeowners.
- Works with other Houston Habitat internal departments to further the mission of Homeowner Services from funding its work to developing future neighborhood sites or working to integrate volunteer opportunities for prospective home buyers.
- Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business, social work, or related field of study
- Five years of working in family services and/or federal housing program administration is strongly preferred
- Three-to-five years of leadership experience in non-profit organizations is a plus
- HUD Certification
- Mortgage Loan Certification
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
- Must be familiar with federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding working with HUD and other federal and state agencies that impact the home ownership process.
- Must have the ability to work cooperatively with the CEO, Board of Directors, community leaders and Habitat colleagues.
- Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as effective interpersonal and presentation skills.
- Strong leadership, project management and coaching skills are essential.
- Must have excellent evaluative assessment skills to provide guidance to the department in assessing family situations and providing appropriate direction.
- Must have strategic planning and critical thinking skills in order to develop and expand long-term strategies on how to promote the Houston-Habitat homeownership process and to expand department services into related areas.
