Executes a portfolio of community-based events, with accountability for significant income targets, as well as event-related mission and advocacy activities. Ensures the achievement of goals through effective volunteer leadership, engagement, empowerment, and mobilization. Leverages and manages multiple high-impact relationships, working with volunteers and partners throughout the community.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Accountable for the achievement of income performance targets for a portfolio of community-based events which may include: Relay For Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Distinguished Events, and other community fundraising events.
  • Demonstrates expertise in the implementation of best practices for volunteer leadership development, event participation and event revenue growth; drives and encourages creativity and innovation at the community level.
  • Demonstrates advanced skills in fundraising, community engagement, organization, relationship building, mission literacy, and talent identification.
  • Monitors financial expenditures and progress against budgetary plan and takes appropriate measures to meet top line and bottom line goals ensuring a high ROI in meeting revenue targets.
  • Engages, recruits, trains and manages relationships with community volunteers to ensure successful fundraising and event execution, with a focus on event volunteer leadership positions and volunteer succession planning; facilitates volunteer retention and ensures meaningful volunteer recognition.
  • Engages the community to drive increased event participation; including event committee, teams, team members, sponsors, survivor/caregiver engagement, and youth engagement.
  • Provides leadership through project & workgroup participation and by providing support, recognition and coaching to other community managers; supports the overall success of community-based events through special activities and responsibilities above and beyond event portfolio.
  • Serves as a mentor for new community managers; Serves in a training capacity inside and outside the division;
  • Partners with new staff on community visits demonstrating key skills in team/volunteer recruitment, sponsorship and community engagement
  • Actively collaborates with Community Development, Distinguished Partners, Cancer Control, and ACS CAN staff to maximize event success; leverages opportunities to engage corporations, health systems, and community organizations in events, focusing on event sponsorship and participation.
  • Integrates mission/cancer control activities and messaging within events for achievement of identified event-related mission goals, including enterprise-wide initiatives and ACS CAN.
  • Leads the development of relationships with and engagement of target partners, organizations, corporations, and individuals
  • Successfully executes large scale events, resulting in a positive event experience:
    • Partners with enterprise support and region support services functions and ensures appropriate support is provided- Utilizes available tools and processes, including online fundraising
    • Utilizes and responds to applicable customer experience survey, comparative event and success factors data.
    • Utilizes defined processes to ensure timely and accurate event data entry.
    • Effectively and efficiently completes activities and meets target deadlines.
  • Ensures compliance with ACS policies, including employment, risk management, event and cash handling, and financial controls.
  • Maintains a productive and collaborative relationships with the Society’s global headquarters departments and other regions; participates on regional and enterprise projects and committees as appropriate.
  • Models and fosters behavior that establishes a culture that values the staff/volunteer partnership, and is consistent with the values, goals, and objectives of the Society to create an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, accountability, empowerment, and dedication to the mission
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of two years of special events experience.
  • Experience recruiting, managing and engaging volunteers.
  • Experience working in sales teams.

SPECIAL MENTAL OR PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must have access to car or be able to transport materials to and from meetings and special events/programs.
  • Must be able to staff evening and weekend committee meetings, events and programs.
  • Must be able to staff Friday and Saturday overnight Relay and other events, and remain onsite for the duration of the event.
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs and perform set up / take down of event equipment.
