The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for developing and implementing the YMCA of Greater Hartford’s fundraising strategies and initiatives. These include the Capital Campaign, Major Gifts, Grants, Planned Giving and Special Events. Provides leadership and oversight to Development team. Ensures that branch staff receive fundraising direction, support and training. Works closely with the Association Board and volunteers, and supports the President/CEO’s fund development efforts.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Create the plan, strategy, policies and procedures related to fundraising across the Association.
  • Work closely with CEO and senior leaders to identify new initiatives and opportunities designed to increase the donor base.
  • Collaborate with CEO, senior leadership and development team on identification, cultivation and stewardship opportunities for major gifts donors and prospects.
  • Work closely with development staff and senior leadership to continually monitor and analyze plan results and proactively intervene to address any area where goals are not being met.
  • Work closely with CEO and volunteers to identify and prioritize Capital Campaign needs and take a lead role in any Capital Campaign for Association.
  • Work with CEO and senior leadership to set activity and revenue goals for major gifts.
  • Cultivate and steward 50+ major donor prospects, including prospect research and strategy development.
  • Design and implement a plan to secure and follow through on collection of pledges/financial commitments.
  • Work with senior leadership and Executive Directors, in a concerted effort to develop major gift prospects, maximizing efficiency and productivity.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, develop and manage members of the Development team.
  • Create and manage budget for Development department.
  • Compose special proposals and letters to major gifts donors, solicit or participate in solicitations as appropriate.
  • Develop briefings, letters, proposals and related materials for key volunteers, CEO and senior leaders as necessary to support the acquisition and solicitation of prospects and donors.
  • Build relationships with Board members, develop a network of potential donors (business and individual) and attend local networking events.
  • Provide training to senior leaders and volunteers on identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects.
  • Work collaboratively with CEO’s office to identify, plan and implement donor recognition events and any Association-wide Special Events.
  • Work collaboratively with senior leaders to develop a plan for Special Events across the association.
  • Ensure that there is a calendar for grant submissions and a system is in place for researching and appropriately responding to grant opportunities.
  • Works collaboratively with Marketing to promote brand awareness, identifies and communicates opportunities to increase awareness and supports the development of communication materials as needed.
  • Support and have a development team presence at key branch fundraising events.
  • Act as staff support to assigned committees and/or task forces related to Development.
  • Act as a member of the senior management team.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
B.S. degree in Human Services or related field and seven to nine years of previous fundraising experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience managing and leading a fundraising department, raising at least $3M or more per year preferred.
  • Experience with Capital Campaigns preferred.
  • Experience maintaining a portfolio of major donors preferred.
  • YMCA fundraising experience a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills.
  • A working knowledge of fundraising software and fundraising tools.
  • Strong abilities in consensus building and goal setting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel to various locations

  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $130,000.00 - $150,000.00
