Outreach Assistant, Waggoner's Gap

The Waggoner's Gap Outreach Assistant will assist with outreach programs in the greater Harrisburg region and work at Waggoner's Gap, an active hawk watch site, from August 1 to December 31, 2018 at approximately 10-15 hours per week. S/he is responsible for site maintenance and care throughout the fall and maintains regular communication with the hawk watch crew and visitors. This position will also recruit, organize and implement volunteer days, which will include removing litter, invasive plants and enhancing native plant gardens, and help Audubon engage individuals from the 3,000 visitors who come to the site each fall.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist staff with outreach efforts throughout the Harrisburg region.
  • Assist Deputy Director, Conservation and Engagement with maintenance of Waggoner’s Gap.
  • Communicate with hawk watch counters and visitors.
  • Recruit, organize and implement volunteer cleanup days monthly.
  • Design and maintain native plant gardens.
  • Maintain trail system and work with Trail Club.
  • Work with vendors to provide services at the site.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or similar field required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Self-motivated individual who can work well independently in the field
  • Ability to work outside in various weather situations, as well as on some weekend days
  • Experience with teaching and/or interacting with visitors
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and hike site (steep rocky slopes)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, including the ability to work with a variety of audiences: volunteers, staff, the general public and others
