The Construction Supervisor plays a vital role in meeting the mission of Habitat for Humanity as they lead and educate volunteer groups and individuals in performing daily residential construction tasks. The Construction Supervisor works in partnership with all of Habitat’s key stakeholders including staff and board members, volunteers, donors, subcontractors and vendors, and the cities of Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse Texas.
Areas of Responsibility:
Construction Management
- Responsible for all aspects of both on-site and off-site construction management including but not limited to: permits, planning, scheduling, supplier and product selection, subcontractor solicitation and selection, contract and change order management, infrastructure preparation, site prep and erosion control, coordination of the processes and inspections required throughout the build process and for certificate of occupancy, and coordination of staff resources on a daily basis.
- Executes production goals established in partnership with the Executive Director to ensure success of the affiliate’s strategic plan for completed housing units through scheduled management and communication.
- Sets construction budget in partnership with the Executive Director; reviews, approves, tracks and reports all construction-related invoices and costs..
Program Support
- Works with the Executive Director to create and support residential construction program metrics and requirements that promote a safe, positive, productive and educational environment for fellow staff, volunteers, donors and partner families.
- Establish internal structure, procedures and processes required to meet objectives and manage day-to-day operations. This includes the development of an operations manual to communicate the process and procedures involved in every phase of the project to ensure safety, quality and completion.
- Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure positive experiences for groups and individuals volunteering on the job site.
- Clearly, politely, safely and efficiently explains and demonstrates the use of approved tools and tasks to volunteers. This may require repeating the instructions as many volunteers are not skilled with residential construction tasks, tools or verbiage.
- Coordinate, support, demonstrate and maintain required safety practices – ensure use of equipment and/or protective measures for volunteers or other construction trades/suppliers in partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator.
Safety Management
- Implements the organization’s construction Safety plan and Program by training employees and construction volunteers on safe practices and standards consistent with current OSHA regulations and Habitat for Humanity International policies.
- Competent Person Safety certified (or able to be so within 6 months of hire)
- Maintains current safety practices.
- Remains current on safety regulations and policies.
- Participates in external safety training opportunities.
Interpersonal and Leadership Skills
- Enhances the organization’s culture by reinforcing core values and fostering a collaborative, positive, safe and educational work environment.
- Sustains a collaborative environment to ensure positive, effective and efficient working relationships between staff in all departments of the organization, as well as suppliers, contractors, partner families and volunteers.
- Provides mentoring opportunities for construction volunteers and manages the daily training needs of volunteers to equip them to meet day’s program goals.
- Monitors self-performance on a regular basis and creates and reviews annual performance and professional development metrics as agreed upon with the Executive Director. This includes taking the initiative to identify opportunities for professional development that will enhance satisfaction with the position and organization.
- Maintains professional, discrete communication and does not pass along information that may be considered confidential, private, and protected information to either partner families, volunteers, donors, vendors or other staff.
Communication & Planning
- Works with Executive Director to develop annual work plans and metrics for measurable construction program efficiencies.
- Communicates in a timely manner with the Executive Director and Volunteer Coordinator to monitor construction program activities, including volunteer satisfaction, and reacts to impacts of unplanned events in a professional and timely manner.
- Ensures that the Executive Director is fully informed in a timely and consistent manner of all construction related planning, administrative and programmatic activities.
- Communication with architects and engineers as needed to get clarification on design questions.
- Takes the initiative to know what is going on within the organization and the construction team by participating in meetings, asking questions and making sure everyone is on the same page.
- Facilitates volunteer trainings with diverse participants.
Educational Background:
Minimum High School diploma or equivalent required. A 2 year degree in construction or a related field preferred with a BA/BS degree more preferable.
Skills/Experience:
- Must be a skilled multi-tasker with project management experience and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Must have advanced computer skills, and be comfortable with and efficiently use technology, including Microsoft Office; primarily Outlook, Word, Excel, and Project.
- Ability to sequence work and develop build schedules in Microsoft Project.
- Ability to use both android and apple smart devices such as smart phones and tablets.
- Solid knowledge and experience in managing residential house construction, for a minimum of at least 3 years, preferably 5-7 years.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:
- Significant residential construction supervisory experience is preferred.
- 3-7 years of direct on-site experience with increasing responsibility in an applicable setting.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB:
- Ability to work effectively in both office and construction site environments.
- Ability to sit at a desk or to stand on ones feet for extended periods of time.
- Ability to travel to and from meetings and appointments in locations and times when public transportation is unavailable.
- Ability to adequately traverse a residential construction job site; climbing, jumping, lifting, carrying (minimum 35-50 lbs.) or other similar activities as required.
- Ability to evaluate completed construction tasks/stages for their correctness to pass inspections.
- Ability to maneuver typical construction site obstacles.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS:
- Some weekend and evening hours are required.
- Ability to function well in both interior and exterior working environments during a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold.
- Ability to drive all construction vehicles and pull trailers as required.
- Able to drive throughout the service area (GSA of Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse) to reach construction sites as applicable.
