The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for an Organizing and Engagement Manager for the CA Tobacco Center . We currently have2 openingsand the preferred locations would be Los Angeles or the San Francisco Bay area ( w e are willing to look at candidates across the state of California)

The Organizing and Engagement Manager will be a key staff member of the American Heart Association’s new California Tobacco Endgame Center for Organizing and Engagement (CA Tobacco Center). In this role, you will be responsible for creating and leading capacity building activities for local coalitions and other California tobacco control grantees with the aim of building tobacco policy and system change. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with and driving key stakeholders/partners to address tobacco control and Center priorities, goals and objectives. This role helps to drive a comprehensive training and technical assistance plan that engages key leaders, stakeholders and champions implementing tobacco control programming across local communities and statewide in California.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible grant-funded position. Current funding is through.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Executes effective relationship management with state and community awardees, and coalitions, to ensure that these grantees effectively implement technical assistance to ensure that campaign plans are effectively implemented.
  • Provide technical assistance and coaching to awardees and their coalitions encompassing the entire range of tobacco control policy and system changes. Develop and coach in the areas of strategic campaign planning, coalition development, community organizing and engagement, digital and media, stakeholder and leadership management and engagement, power building and coalition development and management.
  • Develop an account management plan to support tobacco awardees on their training and technical assistance needs and support for their priority areas to build their capacity to adopt policy and systems changes.
  • Promotes and demonstrates effective collaboration with program team and awardees to ensure effective field technical assistance as well as achievement of project goals and outcome objectives.
  • Promote and demonstrates effective collaboration with strategic advocacy partners to ensure the effectiveness of field technical assistance.
  • Ensure communities have access to the breadth and depth of resources available from the AHA by leveraging resources, tools and assets (e.g. communication, advocacy, field resources). Utilize existing materials, products and recruitment tools or develop new tools and materials as needed. Develop plans for disseminating or distributing resources and tools through communication or social media assets.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Health, Public Policy, or a related area or equivalent work experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, and advocacy tactic development and implementation.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in public health policy.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of local, state and federal government activities and structures. Ability to assess the local and state governments related to advocacy issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team.
  • Ability to concurrently manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
  • Proficient skills and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.
  • Ability to travel locally approx. 50% and overnight approx. 10% of the time.

Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

  • Two (2) years of experience in volunteer management.
  • Bilingual - English and Spanish.
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills.
  • Knowledge of health care systems, clinical settings, public health, voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations.
