The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Field Media Advocacy Manager, CA Tobacco Center . The preferred location for this position is Los Angeles or SF Bay area (we are willing to look at candidates across the state of California.

The Field Media Advocacy Manager is responsible for providing consultation, technical assistance, and execution support of media organizing and community engagement components of state and local policy and system change campaigns. Additional responsibilities include development, drafting and distribution of communication tools used by California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP) grantees in the field as well as ensuring editing and messaging is consistent in the creation of tools and materials.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible grant funded position. Current funding is through.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide editorial guidance in the development, drafting and distribution of communication tools used by policy change campaigns in the field.
  • Builds template tools as well as works with individual campaigns for customized needs and training.
  • Represents the Tobacco Control Center, California Department of Public Health and the AHA’s agenda in appropriate health-related partnerships and coalitions, providing consultation and strategic recommendations dealing specifically with earned news media and systems and policy change work.
  • Serves as a strategic resource on state and local communications advocacy and related tobacco control media issues to CTCP campaigns. Provide editing and message consistency to the team and campaigns in the creation of tools and materials.
  • Serves as a media advisor, along with the Project Director and the State and Local Tobacco Organizing Manager(s) and the CTPC awardee on state and local tobacco control issues.
  • Manage vendors and contractors who support media advocacy work.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, Public Health, Public Policy, Political Science, Communication, Law, Journalism, related field or equivalent experience in media relations, corporate communications and/or marketing.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Four (4) years of experience in media relations, corporate communications and/or marketing.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience:
  • Working in public health policy.
  • In advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, and advocacy tactic development and implementation.
  • Proficient knowledge of local, state government activities and structures. Ability to assess the local and state governments related to advocacy issues.
  • Ability to concurrently manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with staff, and the public as part of a team.
  • Ability to travel locally approx. 50% and overnight approx. 10% of the time.

Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience with:
  • Public health issues.
  • Working with coalitions in public policy campaigns.
  • Training non-media professional in media advocacy strategy and tactics.
  • InDesign proficiency preferred.
