In aggregate we’re seeking to shift the nature of what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century – enabling and encouraging Jewish people to have an impact in the world and transforming Jewish life in the process. We are based in New York City and the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village CT. We also have offices in Denver, Boulder, and Detroit.

At Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center, we strive to serve food that is locally sourced, minimally processed and sustainably grown, and to educate our participants about those food choices. The type of food we serve reflects the desires of our diverse clientele. We also provide high quality vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options at all meals. Our on-site organic farm contributes to the kitchen’s produce during the summer and fall seasons and all of the food we serve in our kitchen is aligned with our food values.

The Executive Chef will be supervised by the Director of Hospitality. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Requires strong leadership and creative presence to the kitchen
    • Create and execute seasonal farm to table menus
    • Teach and empower our kitchen staff
    • Be the field general in the kitchen to provide clear direction and organize prep sheets
    • Foster a communicative and kind team environment where everyone knows their roles and works collaboratively
    • Support other organizational staff in developing content for food education materials and curricula
  • Run a tight ship
    • Deliver and maintain the kitchen, storage areas and loading dock in a clean and organized manner and in compliance with relevant health codes
    • Oversee and delegate food and equipment ordering responsibilities
    • Ensure our kitchen operates in alignment with the budget
    • Create and implement HACCP plan for food service areas   
    • Maintain all kitchen equipment, including responsibility of repairs and replacement
    • Ensure all food and equipment ordering is in line with food values and budget
    • Continually look for new systems to improve all facets of food services
  • Be a passionate champion for Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center’s food values
    • Support and help maintain the retreat center’s commitment to locally grown organic food and use of products from our farm (Adamah Farm)
    • Ensure all ingredients used in the kitchen are aligned with the retreat center’s food values and continually source better, more financially viable options
    • Support and maintain the retreat center’s commitment to environmental ethics through recycling and composting  
    • Create healthy, well balanced vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free alternatives at every meal
  • Create wonderful, special events for Weddings, B’nai Mitzvah, etc.
  • Have knowledge and/or respect for Kashrut
    • Under Mashgiach’s (kosher supervisor) supervision, ensure that kosher laws are strictly enforced and work with the mashgiach to learn and understand the application of kosher standards
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience supervising a kitchen and dining hall staff
  • Experience in catering for groups of 100 or more
  • Experience in farm to-table cuisine
  • Experience in Jewish cuisine
  • Knowledge of kosher food laws
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary is commensurate with experience, including benefits package. Housing may be available.
