The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Public Health Program Manager, Heart REACH in our National Center office. This position will be located in El Paso County, Texas .

This role is responsible for creating and leading capacity building activities for local coalitions with the aim to build policy, systems and environmental (PSE) improvements. Responsible for collaborating with and driving a coalition of key stakeholders/partners in the assigned region to address health related concerns such as poor nutrition, lack of access to physical activity and/or tobacco use and exposure. Responsible for providing hands-on field consultation, coaching and technical support through account management techniques.

The Public Health Program Manager will take an account management approach to build trusted relationships within coalition partners and stakeholders within El Paso County, Texas will work with local coalition(s) who will provide guidance, leadership and support to implement the identified priorities of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Heart Association’s under the Heart REACH grant.

The Public Health Program Manager will work closely with the national project team which includes: the Sr. Manager, the Operations Manager and Program Coordinator as well as the Southwest Region’s Advocacy and Community Impact staff to support the development of policy, systems and environmental changes. The Regional Campaign Manager will coordinate the local activities across either the nutrition/physical activity or tobacco control and prevention portfolio to build the capacity of the coalitions through a variety of activities such as: collaborating with partners, communications; and training and technical assistance with the aim to build policy and system changes.

This is a full time, benefits eligible grant funded position. Current funding is through 10/2023. We currently have 2 openings. Position 1 will focus on Tobacco Control and Position 2 will focus on Healthy Eating and Physical Activity.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Identify, recruit, and mobilize local coalition partners and key volunteers to implement and support the assigned area of focus community action plan. Develop policy and systems support for priority areas (e.g., tobacco use/exposure, physical inactivity, poor nutrition).
  • Provide technical assistance and coaching to community coalitions encompassing the entire range of policy and system changes. Develop and coach volunteers in the areas of strategic campaign planning, coalition development, community action plan implementation, resource development, communications, and grassroots development etc.
  • Research and identify coalition partner interests, strengths and capacity to engage with the Heart REACH program. Channels coalition partners to the best opportunities to plug into the Heart REACH program. Builds trusted relationships and effectively works with and through volunteers.
  • Promotes and demonstrates effective collaboration with program team and local coalitions to ensure effective field technical assistance as well as achievement of project goals and outcome objectives.
  • Ensure communities have access to the breadth and depth of resources available from the AHA by leveraging resources, tools and national center assets (e.g. communication, advocacy, field resources). Utilize existing AHA materials, products and recruitment tools or develop new tools and materials as needed. Develop plans for disseminating or distributing resources and tools through local/state affiliate communication or social media assets.
  • Provide program team with detailed results for effective tracking. Assists in the development of appropriate reports, evaluations, and data gathering for grant-funded activities.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences, Public Health, Public Policy, Political Science, Communication, Law, Journalism, related field or equivalent experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience or demonstrated understanding in advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, media/communications, and grassroots advocacy tactic development and implementation.
  • Experience working in public health policy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
  • Demonstrated understanding and appreciation for the use of technology and information systems.
  • Must be able to travel within your assigned territory up to 50% daily and overnight approx. 10% of the time.
