The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Grassroots Advocacy Director in Minneapolis . The Director will manage the mobilization, recruitment and retention of grassroots and key contact volunteers in support of the AHA’s advocacy issues for the assigned region.

The assigned region includes the states of Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota .

Responsibilities Include:

  • Handle the strategic planning and implementation around the recruitment, mobilization, retention and recognition of AHA grassroots volunteers and key contacts.
  • Writes action alerts and mobilizes volunteers to respond to online actions including email alerts, social media outreach and usage of the texting platform.
  • Develops and implements grassroots plans for issue-specific campaigns in coordination with each state’s Government Relations Director(s).
  • Provides advocacy updates through email, text messages, social media tools, AHA state advocacy website, state advocacy blogs, etc.
  • Plans and implements annual day at the Capitol event/lobby days as determined by state needs and engages advocates in annual volunteer summit and other skills-building trainings.

Required Experience

  • 3+ years experience in community organizing and mobilization, public policy, public health, government relations, political and/or issue campaigns. This experience may also count towards satisfying this position’s educational requirement.
  • Bachelor’s or some college plus experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university preferred. College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree. Related experience may be substituted as follows: 1 ½ years experience equates to 1 full-time year of higher education.
  • Use and management of web-based grassroots action sites for sending alerts and managing volunteer and legislator information preferred.
  • Ability to recruit, direct, coach, monitor, and supervise volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of grassroots advocacy principles.
  • Highly skilled and effective in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to do daily travel up to 20% and overnight travel up to 10%.
  • Must have at least basic knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office 2010 or higher used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets. Advanced knowledge and skill with these programs is preferred. These skills are subject to testing.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds with the expectation that items in excess of 20 pounds would be broken down into smaller components or additional assistance is required before lifting and/or moving.
