The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Government Relations Director in Minneapolis . The Director will serve as the primary representative of the AHA to the Minnesota Legislature and relevant state agencies, to generate awareness and support for the American Heart Association’s prevention policy agenda. Our prevention policy agenda includes active living, healthy eating and tobacco control, among other issues.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Meet one-on-one with members of the Minnesota Legislature, their staff, and other state government officials to gain support for the AHA’s advocacy issues. Also work with Minnesota coalitions and partner organizations to build support.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory issues of concern to the AHA in the state of Minnesota and apprises appropriate AHA volunteers and staff of emerging advocacy issues.
  • Participates in coalition efforts and other collaborative partnerships to leverage opportunities that advance the AHA’s advocacy issues.
  • Provide policy research, development of support materials, recruiting of spokespersons, preparing testimony, and other activities as needed to advance the AHA legislative agenda in Minnesota.
  • Manage and provide guidance on AHA policy positions to contract lobbyists for the state of Minnesota.

Required Experience

  • 4+ years experience in two or more of the following areas: community/grassroots organizing, volunteer recruitment, and public policy/government relations. Experience in lobbying at the local, state and/or federal levels. This experience may also count towards satisfying this position’s educational requirement.
  • Bachelor’s or some college plus experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university preferred. College coursework combined with related experience may be substituted for a degree. Related experience may be substituted as follows: 1 ½ years experience equates to 1 full-time year of higher education.
  • Experience and knowledge of the Minnesota state’s legislative, regulatory and political processes preferred.
  • Knowledge of voluntary health organizations or nonprofit organizations.
  • Highly skilled and effective in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to do daily travel up to 20% and overnight travel up to 10%.
  • Must have at least basic knowledge and skill with Microsoft Office 2010 or higher used for word processing, email, presentations, and spreadsheets. Advanced knowledge and skill with these programs is preferred. These skills are subject to testing.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds with the expectation that items in excess of 20 pounds would be broken down into smaller components or additional assistance is required before lifting and/or moving.
