Initiates, directs, and executes all scientific research and/or development strategies in research studies and scientific projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles, methods, and concepts to studies, problems, and projects. Plans and executes training/training materials for research studies and internal and external researchers. Makes major contributions to scientific literature and conferences. Acts as spokesperson on research studies and scientific projects and advises executive management. Interfaces with various departments and serves as an internal consultant.  Functions as a lead scientist in a cross-functional team environment, with primary responsibility for research studies.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops scientifically appropriate approaches to answering a variety of research questions and works of large scope and complexity with staff in other divisions and in the field to identify and prepare research sites.
  • Provides scientific leadership in the design and implementation of research studies and proposals.
  • Drafts, edits, reviews and presents analysis of research findings and reports for publication and training materials.  
  • Provides in-house review of protocols, papers, research strategies and proposals for funding projects for methodological and technological soundness.
  • Develops and improves systems, including manuals or documents that strengthen services and technical assistance efforts.
  • Successfully identifies funding for scientific work and manages budget for one or more research projects.  
  • Mentors and guides other scientists through collaboration of research strategies, processes, and findings.
  • Performs responsibilities of level two for at least 6 months prior to promotion to the level 3 positions.
  • Publishes at least 3 or more manuscripts or conference presentations a year as leading author or contributing author. 
  • Demonstrated leadership with the successful design, implementation, and analysis of peer–reviewed research activities.
  • Participates in international technical guidance or standard-setting events or conferences.  
  • Recognized leader in their field of expertise by speaking, organizing or leading national or international conferences, serves on scientific or technical advisory boards, and gives oral presentations or teaches university course-level work.  
  • Demonstrates continued success at applying for or contributing to efforts to receive funding for scientific work that supports company’s goals.  
  • Utilizes state of art technologies to identify important pathways in research development.  
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and efficiency needed to meet critical organization objectives.  
  • Assist senior management in identifying and evaluating organization research capabilities which will help strengthen proposals, key technologies and strategies directed toward organization growth.

  • Exercises judgment in selecting methods, evaluation criteria and techniques for obtaining results.
  • Decisions have major impact on the management and operations of an area within a department.

Supervision Given/Received:

  • May lead the design and implementation of strategic, operational and business decisions that affect the department.
  • Consults with management and external organizations within the scientific community to complete research goals and objectives.
  • Leads and mentors other scientists.
  • Typically reports to a Director.
Educational Background: 
Doctorate Degree or its International Equivalent • Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Medicine or Related Field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts and practices used in analysis of scientific projects and research studies.
  • Excellent quantitative/qualitative and analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, identify errors and provide correction action.  
  • Demonstrates technical skills, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought.
  • Project or technical leadership experience required.
  • Experience with leading large research programs, grants, or cooperative agreements or provision of research-support services.
  • Typically requires 12+ years of experience with scientific disciplines developing strategies in research studies and scientific projects.
  • Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients’ and staff.  
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • Prior work experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO) or in work-related academic, governmental, or industry setting.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Typical office environment. Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift 5-50 lbs.
