The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) / Managing Director will lead and advance the work of World Vision Switzerland (WVS), by providing exceptional guidance and leadership of staff and overseeing all areas of operations, including but not limited to: strategy management, people management and development, income generation and financial resources/risk management, board and partnership engagement. You will work to ensure effective leadership of ministry in alignment with World Vision International Vision, Mission, Core Values, and global strategic direction, Our Promise 2030.
WV Switzerland has grown since its launch in 1981 and is currently operating at an income level of 35MCHF. With ambitious targets set for fundraising growth, and a determination to develop high standards across all aspects of the organization, WVS needs to balance external engagements with the need to focus and align its resources around critical organizational priorities.
The CEO needs to focus on leading the strategy implementation and developing external engagement/relations in Switzerland and across the WV Partnership, championing fundraising. The challenge is to enable effective performance management of the organization, ensuring WV Switzerland can integrate the core functions of Marketing, Fundraising, International Programmes, and increasingly Advocacy, as well as the Support functions of Communications & Public Affairs, Finance & Business Intelligence, IT, Impact & Organisational Development.
Strategic Leadership:
- Ensuring delivery of World Vision Switzerland full potential by creating and maintaining strong strategic direction, leading the organization, especially the Senior Leadership Team, in pursuit of the shared mission, and in keeping with the vision, goals and core values. Leads World Vision Switzerland, Instilling High Confidence Across all Key Stakeholders:
- Be the World Vision leader in WVS to ensure organizational alignment with WVI, effective strategic direction, management efficiency, quality ministry & effective fundraising.
- Promotes the organization's Vision, Mission, Values, Policies and Covenant of Partnership to internal and external stakeholders within WVS.
- Provides strategic leadership and integration of Our Promise 2030 so that present & future opportunities to advance the mission and ministries of WVS are identified and incorporated into planning systems.
- Models Christian servant leadership in such a manner that reflects the mission of WVS.
- Personally models a high standard of Christian character and behavior as an example to staff and the public.
- Develops an on-going program of strategy development and visionary leadership from the approved strategy, ensuring its linkage to annual budgets and plans.
- Ensures the objectives of WVS are understood and pursued throughout the organization
- Makes World Vision Switzerland a great place to work and that staff are treated equitably, encouraged to grow and given opportunities for greater contribution to WVS and the partnership.
Ensures Growth and Sustainability Across all Fundraising Streams:
- Builds and maintains sustainability through targeted diversified revenue growth.
- Ensures WVS achieves its fundraising potential and targets.
- Engages directly in fund-raising efforts at the strategic level.
- Ensure relevance and impact of Sponsorship experience so that acquisition and retention targets are met
- Maximizes grant income by establishing development and relief programs that deliver transformative results and impact.
- Invests in innovation to develop new business opportunities and continuous improvement to existing programmes
- Utilizes insightful discernment of emerging challenges and possibilities, nationally, globally and context specific.
- Ensures WVS awareness of the indicators/signs of potential emergencies and leads fundraising response strategies as appropriate.
- Builds and maintains an organizational design, infrastructure and culture that are sustainable for growth and high performance.
- Sets metrics to monitor financials and overall organizational performance.
Board Engagement and Internal Stakeholders:
- Leads in a bold, visionary style within the parameters of overall direction established by the World Vision International Board.
- Keeps the Board fully informed on achievement of strategy, progress against budgets and on other relevant issues.
- Keeps a finger on the pulse of the Partnership and responds proactively to concerns.
- Works collaboratively and effectively as a member of global leadership teams and linking the office to the Partnership.
- Faithfully carries out such additional duties and responsibilities as are from time to time assigned by the Board of World Vision Switzerland (or by its Executive Committee)
- Ensures the continuing development of all functional areas of the entity in conjunction with Partnership policies and systems.
- Fosters strategic capabilities and plans throughout the WV Partnership.
- Recommends the appointment of direct reports to the Board, monitors their contribution to WVS goals and provides support for their development.
Ensures Operational and Stewardship Excellence:
- Provides managerial leadership that fosters collaboration while ensuring an environment of high performance and measurable results.
- Ensures effective stewardship and accountability of World Vision Switzerland’s resources, finances and people, consistent with the performance standards established by the WVS Board of Directors.
- Maximizes WV’s commitment to children and the poorest communities through targeted achievement of “yield to ministry” and percentage revenue to most critical world contexts
- Ensures all corporate and regulatory obligations of the organization.
- Oversees the budgetary process and presents the budget to the Board for approval.
- Manages capital expenditure in accordance to the approved annual operating plan.
- Establishes and maintains the highest of ethical and moral standards in the conduct of all of World Vision Switzerland’s dealings both internally and externally and ensures adequate safeguards are in place to maintain a level of stewardship that is beyond reproach.
External Engagement and Advocacy:
- Identifies, influences, and builds coalitions with national leaders, partners and other key people and organizations.
- Represents World Vision Switzerland as the public spokesperson on all matters except those reserved for the Chair of the Board.
- Acts as the primary national spokesperson and ambassador at the most senior level; develops relationships with national leaders in relevant fields.
- Ensures that WVS is branded in a manner that strongly and appropriately communicates the Mission and Vision of the organization, resulting in strong brand recognition in those markets where WV operates.
- Identifies the underlying patterns of world poverty and injustice and develops appropriate World Vision Switzerland responses in respect to advocacy, interaction, and action.
- Promotes Advocacy to mobilize the public and influence key decision makers to bring justice and equity on behalf of the poor.
- Establishes and maintains those partnerships with other agencies and organizations that will leverage World Vision Switzerland’s Mission and Vision in a broader context.
- Provides vision, leadership, and appropriate actions that strengthen World Vision Switzerland's relationship with and support of the national Christian Churches.
- Other:
- Maintain the programme of continuous personal, spiritual and professional development in conjunction with Partnership policies and systems.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Five (5+) years in a Senior Management Leadership role with proven results in a commercial or not for profit organization with emphasis on successful fundraising.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience working with a Board, either as a member, reporting to one or developing and advising a Board.
- Proven leader of people, with credibility to set a direction that others want to follow with ability to engage small teams of professionals with different backgrounds and experiences.
- Prior experience working in an International Non-Government Organization (i.e. Fundraising, Programming, Advocacy, Grants, Sponsorship, People, Finance).
- Significant international experience, working in a large complex organization with a multi-cultural environment.
- Highly motivated with the ability to manage people, resources and decisions under pressure.
- A heart for the poor and a deep personal commitment to World Vision’s vision, mission and core values.
- Mature Christian leader with ability to work within a Christian framework and be sensitive to its various expressions across cultures and denominations.
- Mother tongue is Swiss German and fluency in English (written and verbal).
Preferred:
- Knowledge of the core operations of an International Non-Government Organization (i.e. Fundraising, Programming, Advocacy, Grants, Sponsorship, People, Finance).
- Working knowledge of French.
Work Environment:
- Willing to travel minimum of 20% of the time, internationally to developing countries and to World Vision Partnership offices several times a year. Exclusive dedication will be required.
