Organizational Overview
The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC) is a statewide membership-based coalition of immigrant, labor, interfaith, youth and ally organizations founded in 2002 to build a unified statewide voice to improve the lives of immigrants and refugees in Colorado and the United States. CIRC is a 501(c)(3) organization under the Internal Revenue Code and achieves its mission through non-partisan civic engagement, public education and advocacy to win fair, humane and workable public policies.
The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition Action Fund (CIRC Action Fund) is a 501 (c)(4) non-profit organization that believes in the inherent dignity and human rights of every person, regardless of immigration status. CIRC Action works to build a strong and thriving Colorado where all residents are treated with dignity and respect, have equal access to a fair and just quality of life, and have the opportunity to live united with family members. We achieve this mission by advocating for fair, humane, and workable public policies at the state and local level and by engaging in civic participation with new Americans.
CIRC and CIRC Action Fund are unionized and the contract extends to all personnel, whether members of the bargaining unit or not.
Job Description
The Development Director will provide visionary, strategic leadership to secure significant gifts from institutional funders and individual donors to support CIRC and CIRC Action Fund’s current and future goals. The Development Director leads the implementation of annual fundraising strategies that support CIRC’s annual budget of $2.1 million and CIRC AF’s annual budget of $800,000 through institutional and individual giving.
This position will serve as a member of the Directors Team and will work closely with CIRC/AF’s Communications Teams to create effective marketing and communications materials to highlight the impact of our work through our websites, social media, annual reports, brochures, and other program collateral. This role also works closely with CIRC’s Executive Director and CIRC Action Fund’s Managing Director.
The Development Director will be passionate about following a fundraising approach that leans into the tenets of community-centric fundraising and resource mobilization. CIRC/AF’s Development Team hopes to become a leader in developing an effective fundraising model that actively advances equity and justice, and counters white supremacy culture. We see ourselves playing an important role in reforming philanthropy in Colorado by organizing our donors and funders, educating them on how to better resource our movement, and show up for immigrant justice.
Specific Roles and Responsibilities:
C3/C4 Fund Development
With the Executive Director, develop and implement fundraising strategies to support CIRC and CIRC Action Fund’s annual budgets through institutional, corporate, and individual giving.
With the ED, build and cultivate relationships with major donors, corporate sponsors, and philanthropic institutions. Take the lead on securing meetings and with the ED strategize plans for each conversation.
With the ED, research new foundation prospects, funding sources, partnerships, and stakeholder relationships that can lead to CIRC/AF securing larger grants.
Prepare grant proposals and reports, ensure sound management and implementation of grants.
Direct fundraising appeals, events, and campaigns, online giving strategies, and oversee the creation of fundraising materials by the Development Manager and CIRC/AF’s communications teams, including newsletters and annual reports.
Ensure donor and grant data is entered in the organizations’ CRMs, mainly Salesforce.
With the ED and the Board of Directors, ensure continued growth of CIRC’s endowment fund (launched in 2020) and planned giving program (launched in 2021).
Continue to develop and maintain fundraising practices and structures that improve efficiency, clarity, communications, and transparency across the organization (grants trackers, biweekly meetings with the communications teams, involving relevant staff members in grant writing and reporting, etc.)
Develop and maintain CIRC’s Monitoring & Evaluation processes when it comes to specific grants, including communicating with relevant departments in the proposal development stage, regular communication with departments responsible for grant deliverables, ensuring the collection of information on spreadsheets for grants with specific deliverables, etc.
Implement community-centric and anti-racist fundraising practices.
Support the Development Manager in processing and recording income, including checks from individuals and foundations, and work with CIRC’s bookkeeper to reconcile donations with deposits on a monthly basis for CIRC and CIRC AF.
Support capacity building efforts of CIRC’s members by organizing at least one fundraising training per year for them and sharing relevant funding opportunities via the membership update.
Leadership & Management
Serve on the Directors’ Team and support in the development of organizational practices and policies, including responding to any requests or issues regarding the union’s contract.
Support the ED and Directors’ Team in the development of CIRC and CIRCAF’s annual operating budgets, grant/project budgets, and review financial statements on a monthly basis.
Work as a thought partner with the Executive Director to establish a long-term fundraising vision for the organization to ensure sustainability and implementation of our core mission.
Implement quarterly fundraising reviews for CIRC/AF with the Development Manager and Executive Director to track progress towards goals and adjust fundraising strategies accordingly.
Support with CIRC/AF’s annual audits, especially regarding grant letters, grant receivables, list of in-kind donations, and analysis of donor-restricted net assets, ensure timely submission of required documentation, and respond in a timely manner to auditor’s questions.
Work with development staff to engage board, staff, members, and volunteers in supporting the fundraising goals of the organization and ensure fundraising goals are integrated into staff work plans.
Support the Executive Director by attending presentations, funder convenings, fundraising events, and community engagement meetings as needed.
Supervise Development Manager, provide leadership and guidance, and support their continued growth and professional development.
Serve as a member of the Labor Management Committee or Racial Justice Committee.
Support in the development and implementation of CIRC/AF’s joint strategic plan,
especially with regards to fundraising goals, objectives, and tactics.
Demonstrated Commitment to Anti-Oppression
Participate actively in CIRC’s internal anti-oppression and inclusivity efforts to make progress toward a vision of an organizational culture that reflects the values/principles that we are fighting for in the community.
Key Competencies
Successful track record in a development role for community based organizations, with demonstrated success in raising funds from foundations, individuals, and corporate. Experience in the immigrant justice movement and/or multi-entity organizations (c3/c4/IEs) is a plus.
Ability to self-start work, set goals, follow through, and report progress on those goals.
Ability to make quick and sound decisions, solve problems, and to work collaboratively with other departments.
Detail oriented, highly organized, and strong time management skills to juggle competing priorities and deadlines.
Up to 15% travel within state and occasional out of state travel. Ability to work evenings and weekends as fundraising events require.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, web browsers, Gmail, Google Calendar and the basics of spreadsheet, database, and video conferencing software.
Familiarity with database softwares such as Every Action, Salesforce, etc.
Proficiency in Spanish and/or other languages of Colorado’s diverse immigrant and refugee communities preferred, but not required.
Hire date and duration
This position is a permanent, full-time, position, with an expectation of 36 hours worked per week. The position is set to start on July 11th, 2022. This position is not eligible for overtime pay
Supervision
The Development Director will report to the Executive Director. This position currently supervises the Development Manager and may supervise contractors as necessary.
Salary
This is a full-time position and has a starting salary of $56,150 annually, subject to increase as pay-tier revisions allow.
Cell Phone & Internet
CIRC will pay a $75/month stipend to support your use of your cell phone, to be included in your paycheck. You will also receive a $25 monthly stipend to support with any internet needs.
Reimbursements will be made for expenditures during the normal course of your work at the following levels:
Mileage - 65 cents per mile.
Food, lodging, supplies or miscellaneous expenses will be reimbursed based on approval of submitted forms and receipts.
Health Insurance
Pursuant to the CIRC staff handbook, full-time, permanent staff that work above 20 hours are offered 100% employer-sponsored health, vision and dental insurance for themselves plus two dependents under the age of 18.
