The American Heart Association has a great opportunity for a Writer/Editor based out of our National Center office located in Dallas, TX! The Writer/Editor helps produce a daily report of compelling original content about the latest developments in heart disease, stroke and health issues. This position helps to educate consumers and serve the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The Writer/Editor reports to the News Editor, and together they produce news stories and features displayed on AHA properties and shared widely through syndication. The Writer/Editor plans, writes, assigns and edits stories, and helps plan artwork, develop videos and graphics, and route stories for approval. The Writer/ Editor works primarily with staff and freelance writers, editors, staff subject matter experts, external experts and AHA volunteers. The Writer/ Editor also assists the News Editor with other duties as needed to produce the daily news report.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Identifies, plans, creates story and theme, and writes original, engaging content to inform, educate and entertain various audiences in both print and digital media
  • Edits content to ensure it is grammatically correct, fact-checked, Science approved, and consistent with brand style or tone. Researches and recommends original content for coverage
  • Ensures accuracy by routing stories through executives, scientists, volunteers and other experts
  • Collaborates with designers, videographers and graphic artists for supporting illustration or formatting of stories for presentation to external media outlets
  • Assists the team otherwise as directed
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Experience creating engaging content across various channels and mediums (magazines, newspaper, web content, blogs, newsletters, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret audience needs and media required to engage
  • Experience creating content for consumers, health and/or wellness markets
  • Proven editorial skills and a passion for grammar
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities
  • Ability to travel up to 5% local and overnight stay
