VP Strategy Insight and Design

The VP of Strategy Insights and Design will serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and Board Officers on trends, strategic business opportunities, and organizational design. This role also includes design and management of processes and supporting services to develop the organizational strategic plan and supporting plans on a periodic cycle. Includes management of special strategic projects and management of marketing research services to support decision making throughout the organization. Serves as a partner with business leads to develop, monitor and course correct to achieve goals and provide end-to-end solutions across multiple functional areas.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manages the development of a strategic plan composed of ten-year and three-year goals, including staffing and managing the volunteer group charged with overseeing the process. Models and facilitates the development of the overall system of supporting plans to accomplish the strategic plan goals. Works to ensure integration and alignment of plans throughout the Association. Develops a disciplined approach to monitoring and course correction to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Serves as a partner to the Business Leads across all five pillars of our work -- (1) leading breakthroughs in science and technology, (2) changing policy, (3) changing systems, (4) transforming healthcare, and (5) transforming communities – to drive successful planning and implementation of the business strategy, including collaboration with other core functions within the AHA that constitute a coordinated, aligned and accountable plan.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Board Officers, including appraising on external trends, strategic business opportunities, and organizational design.
  • In conjunction with internal and external stakeholders, conducts/analyzes existing market needs against an inventory of internal assets to identify gaps and opportunities for an Association-wide portfolio of products and services.
  • Manages select strategic projects with business leads and executives from across the Association to drive strategy across functional areas in an end-to-end- manner.
  • Assures that relevant and timely business intelligence about the environment, markets, science, industry channels, competitors and internal capabilities is gathered, organized and communicated to support planningdecisions.
  • Identifies futurist and/or strategic issues for consideration by volunteer and staff leadership. Facilitates processes for understanding and decision-making related to the strategic issues.
  • Designs and facilitates group processes, trainings, and templates for volunteer and staff leadership to develop various types of plans and to make planning decisions.
  • Develop and facilitate agendas and supporting materials for volunteer and staff planning sessions ranging from conferences to small-group sessions.
  • Develops and/or delivers presentations related to planning to all levels of the organization and to outside parties such as corporate and coalition partners. Works with volunteer leadership to deliver presentations related to planning.
  • Working with the Center for Health Metrics and Evaluation, assures that the Association integrates both business and scientific knowledge in defining goals and measuring progress.
  • Develops business plan templates that include market research, target audiences, need (problem we are trying to solve), value propositions/use cases, business models, financial return, capital required, project risks, project management, etc.
  • Collaborate with appropriate volunteers and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with key strategies.
  • Build strong relationships and partnerships with key players resulting in mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Supervises staff who perform multiple aspects of the above.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strategic planning and implementation experience required particularly in health sciences and technology services related business.
  • Hands on individual that drives for positive results.
  • Must be able to identify, analyze and solve problems; making timely, effective decisions.
  • Must possess exceptional, professional interpersonal communication skills with internal and external customers. Must have the ability to influence others.
  • Will represent the organization professionally and positively in the business community consistent with the Guiding Values of the Association.
  • Act in a manner that is fair and ethical, and always with integrity as well as maintains and safeguards corporate confidentiality.
  • Must also have the ability to work independently and to multi-task managing multiple priorities consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Entrepreneurial “can do” attitude with the ability to find creative, pragmatic solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effortlessly communicate at the right level with business stakeholders, the science research community and engineers.
  • Experience consistently delivering in an agile environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, with excellent problem-solving abilities in the face of ambiguity.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate in multiple, cross-functional team environments including various external and internal stakeholders.
  • Must have experience in planning, evaluation, strategy and corporate/business focused environment; with health and technology fields preferred.
  • Must have ability to communicate effectively to senior leadership, including CEO and Board Officers in order to serve as a trusted advisor on trends, strategic business opportunities, and organizational design.
  • Must have ability to develop and author complex strategic and tactical plans.
  • Must have ability to collaborate across multi-functional teams to ensure successful implementation and evaluation of strategic and tactical plans.
  • Must have ability to develop metrics for evaluation of current assets and programs to determine best future direction and overall fit with Association.
  • Must be a hands-on individual that drives for positive results.
  • Must hold self and others accountable for responsibilities and outcome and possess a high level of planning and organizational skills.
  • Must have experience in working with senior management to align strategies and solutions.
  • Travel is required (at least 30%).
