The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Tax Manager located at our National Center office in Dallas, TX .

Under the direction of the Vice President, Finance, the Tax Manager is responsible for planning and directing all tax reporting and planning functions for the Association, ensuring compliance with all tax and regulatory requirements and protecting the Association's exempt status. The position holds the key responsibility for the preparation, review and filing of the annual IRS Form 990/990T and serves as the coordinator for external tax professionals. Assists management with the assessment of business structures and legal entities for tax implications and planning purposes. Reviews complex legal agreements in a not-for-profit business environment for tax and accounting issues, completes research and offers guidance regarding implications for company impact. Documents and maintains tax policies and planning memoranda as well as policies and procedures related to tax. Handles IRS inquiries on Association matters. Ensures documentation supporting AHA’s tax-exempt status is accessible to appropriate staff including on-demand sales tax certificates.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversee and directly participate in the preparation, review and filing of the Association's annual IRS Form 990/990T and serve as the primary liaison with external tax professionals and external auditors for review. Coordinate all internal 990 review and sign-off procedures, including Audit Committee approval.
  • Direct the Association's compliance with state and local tax requirements including review and approval of sales and use tax returns, sales exemption applications, state charitable and trade name registrations, and property tax filings prepared by staff (or prepared directly if needed).
  • Review corporate sponsorship agreements and event materials for tax and accounting issues.
  • Spearhead the research of new tax guidance and regulations, monitor changes in tax law, and advise company leaders regarding impact and implementation.
  • Supervise and train tax department staff, assign and delegate tasks and review work product of the department.
  • Consult and guide internal customers regarding new revenue strategies and their potential impact for taxation and exemption issues; educate staff on corporate sponsorship matters to minimize unrelated business income tax exposure (e.g., Forms 8282/8283, raffles, permits, auctions, advertising, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the Revenue team on transactions to coordinate correct characterization of revenue and to generate monthly auction reports.
  • Respond to tax-related queries and provide customer service to staff on Association tax issues from various departments (e.g., Legal, HR, Advocacy), and serve as the subject matter expert on tax matters affecting the Association.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
Skills/Experience: 
  • Current CPA certificate
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the related field.
  • Strong knowledge of not-for-profit taxation, primarily in the areas of federal and state/local compliance.
  • Knowledge of GAAP, IRS regulations and not-for-profit accounting.
  • Computerized accounting systems, use of tax research and preparation software applications (e.g., Checkpoint, UltraTax, ProSystemFX or GoSystemsRS).
  • Spreadsheet applications – Excel.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of AHA National Center and Affiliate staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and interpret into both oral and narrative form.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to review and analyze complex legal and business documents.

Here are some of the preferred experience

  • Minimum two years of supervisory experience
  • Advanced knowledge of not-for-profit taxation in the areas of unrelated business taxable income and private benefit.
  • Ability to review and analyze complex and significant legal contracts in a not-for-profit business environment and make assessments for accounting and taxation implications, including unrelated business income and private benefit issues.
