Sr. Manager, Scientific Meetings Programming

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Sr. Manager, Scientific Meetings Programming in our National Center office located in Dallas, TX .

The Sr. Manager provides strategic direction, manages, plans, directs and schedules preparations for program development for various conferences in the AHA Scientific Meetings portfolio by working collaboratively with volunteers, the Meetings team, and vendors. This role is responsible for supervising and coaching three (3) full-time exempt associates.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Works with volunteer committees to implement adult learning principles and education theory into scientific conferences.
  • Oversees all aspects of abstract and invited programs for a portfolio of seven (7) scientific conferences.
  • Manages and collaborates with the volunteer scientific programming committees associated with each conference.
  • Leads high level program committee meetings and attends the Science & Clinical Lifelong Learning Committee and AHA Scientific Council leadership meetings to partner with AHA's volunteers to provide direction, framework and resources.
  • Implements multiple projects and ideas that have come forth from the Sessions Initiative or other concepts/programs derived from the Strategic Plan.
  • Manages and remains current with cutting-edge technology for the distribution of program content via various communication channels.
  • Helps develop and manage the budgets for program management of the scientific conferences.
  • Contributes to the planning, marketing, logistical preparation, sponsorship, and budgeting for the annual Scientific Sessions.
  • Delivers the program content with other AHA departments: Scientific Councils, Scientific Publishing, Exhibits, Registration and Housing, Corporate Relations, News Media, Communications, and Professional Education.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of adult education/meetings content development experience.
  • Strong volunteer and project management skills.
  • proven strategic thinker and self starter with the ability to set and meet critical deadlines.
  • Strong skills in written and oral communication.
  • Knowledge of standard principles and practices of administrative management, including but not limited to supervision of staff and management of budgets.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of AHA staff, volunteers and vendors.
  • Proficient with standard office software packages, including basic knowledge of PC-based database applications and web browsers.
  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 10% of the time.
