Director Advocacy Operations

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Director Advocacy Operations in our National Center office located in Dallas, TX or Washington, DC .

The Director Advocacy Operations is responsible for overseeing business and operations aspects of the Advocacy Department including supporting administrative and operations functions, reports and tools, as well as oversight of operational metrics and data. Additional responsibilities include developing and managing projects, business plans, organizational structure, and technology support as well as providing oversight for budget planning/analysis and developing and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve corporate and funding requirements and report accurate financial results.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Direct business operations for contracting, accounting and financial reporting, and manage expenditures within the approved appropriations and budgets for the department. Develop and manage budget and vendor contracting.
  • Create and maintain a consistent and standard compliance framework with corporate, funding, and federal standards for corporate contracting, procurement and audit (internal, external, financial, and programmatic).
  • Oversee program support systems such as technical assistance, volunteer engagement, program implementation, meeting operations and accountability structure.
  • Develop and shepherd projects such as implementation of advocacy business models, national meeting logistics, grant-funded program reporting, and department-wide communications. Identify, define and assign resources for Advocacy projects to meet timelines and deliverables.
  • Manage assigned staff and volunteer activities. Partner with business/subject matter staff to manage department activities and meetings.
  • Develop and distribute standardized operations reports. Develop and maintain dashboard reporting, data capture and monitoring processes.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Public Health, Political Science, Marketing, Communications, related area or equivalent work experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of Senior level administrative management experience in a comparable not-for-profit, academic, industry, or government setting.
  • Experience with public policy, advocacy administration, or federal grant and lobbying accounting and reporting.
  • Experience managing complex, multi-site, matrix organizations.
  • Exceptional staff and volunteer management experience and successful track record.
  • Strong ability to undertake and deliver long-term strategic and administrative planning.
  • Previous experience and comfort with financial planning, budgeting, development of legal agreements, human resources, management, and high-level volunteer committee work.
  • Strong negotiating skills with clear and concise written and oral communication, effective and concise communication experience and skills; oral and written.
  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 10% of the time.

  • Preferred graduate degree in Business, Public Policy, or Public Health.
