Communications Manager - Health Equity

The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Communications Manager – Heath Equity based out of our National Center office located in Dallas, TX! As an emerging media thought leader with strategic planning experience, the communications manager is a self starter responsible for developing, implementing and executing strategies and tactics for the American Heart Association’s Office of Health Equity (OHE). As a communications manager, individual leads the development and execution of strategic communications plans, is responsible for collaborating with the OHE, the Integrated Programs and Asset Development (IPAD) team, communication leads and other stakeholders to develop media materials, execute national pitch efforts, secure media placements, manage agency resources, identify internal distribution channels, and execute communications efforts to engage field affiliates. Individual has team leader experience and is comfortable presenting strategic planning and ideas to executives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Works collaboratively to create measurable success strategies that align with organizational and sponsor goals. Creates communications plans and materials to promote equitable health programs and sponsor objectives by developing materials to maximize content, events, volunteers, and information. Has a comprehensive understanding of multicultural media and the emerging role of social media to strategize for effective, relevant coverage and implementation. Supports AHA’s affiliate communications directors by providing necessary information to drive year-round coverage. Is responsible for hands-on tactical execution with input and collaboration from The OHE and IPAD teams and agencies when appropriate
  • Manages reactive media inquiries by determining whether and how to respond, identifying and coordinating appropriate volunteers, aligning with communications and business leads, drafting and running approvals for reactive media materials, including but not limited to key messages, CEO statements, and Op-Eds. Liaises with Public & Media Relations Science News team to integrate AHA science news with consumer messages/proposals related to health equity topics when appropriate
  • Executes monitoring, reporting, invoicing, and contracting duties to track, forecast, and measure against objectives
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least three (3) years of relevant experience
  • Extensive knowledge of consumer-focused public relations/media relations, marketing and advertising
  • Public relations and media relations track record of successful placements
  • Media contacts and relationship building
