Associate Director, Save the Children Action Network--East

The Associate Director will be responsible for managing State Managers in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Tennessee who are charged with developing infrastructure and executing advocacy and electoral campaigns. The Associate Director will be responsible for all activities and campaigns that take place in these states, including the recruitment and ongoing engagement of the states’ volunteer base, building SCAN’s Leader and Training Program and closely coordinating the engagement of SCAN’s Student Ambassador Program. They are also responsible for overseeing state policy and advocacy work in Rhode Island and Vermont. This staff person will work with the rest of the State & National Campaigns team to ensure that field staff are fully implementing SCAN campaigns focused on early childhood education domestically and ensuring children globally thrive.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead development of advocacy infrastructure to move our policy agenda in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vermont. (50%)
    • In collaboration with the State Campaigns Director, be responsible for all hiring and management of state managers. Provide regular feedback on performance and address any issues. Work closely with the State Campaigns Director and Senior Director on job descriptions.
    • Establish and implement communications processes that allow managers to have regular meetings and best practice discussions with each other.
    • In close collaboration with Political and Public Affairs staff and partner organizations, implement the legislative and electoral goals related to SCAN’s priority issues in each state.
    • Assist state managers in developing and maintaining partner, coalition, and donor relationships.
    • Support occasional policy research and be responsible for tracking and reporting of legislative affairs and activities.
  • Provide guidance to state managers to ensure they are meeting expectations for the Volunteer Leader and Student Ambassador Programs and working collaboratively with DC staff to build SCAN infrastructure in targeted communities and college and high school campuses. (20%)
  • Work with the State Campaigns Director to manage data collection and manage internal systems for impact reporting. Train staff on data collection processes and systems. (10%)
  • Ensure that state managers have the training and tools necessary to implement their programs. Ascertain needs and arrange for the correct courses, trainings, etc. to address those needs. (10%)
  • Help the State Campaigns Director, Associate Director of Leader and Training Programs and other staff develop and plan aspects of the national Save the Children and Save the Children Action Network Advocacy Summit and State Advocacy Summits. (10%) 
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 5-7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience managing staff, with a preference for remote management experience.
  • Proven experience and knowledge in working with complex data systems for mobilization tracking.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing integrated online-offline organizing, field-based events and grassroots recruitment for advocacy campaigns.
  • A strong understanding of state government operations and the legislative process. 
  • Strong public speaking and training experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Team-player with excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Significant comfort level with social media and technology.
  • Highly professional, motivated, energetic and well organized.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize a number of ongoing projects.
  • Ability to travel frequently to priority districts, and additional travel to meet campaign-specific needs when required.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience working on state legislative or local campaigns.
  • Experience in campus and youth outreach and engagement campaigns.
