Role Overview

Maryland Hillel seeks the organization’s next Development Manager. The successful applicant will serve as the manager of fundraising activity for one of the nation’s most accomplished student empowerment organizations – which serves 5,800 Jewish students at the University of Maryland. Hillel enhances the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world. By curating a menu of social, leadership, religious, educational, and cultural experiences, Hillel strengthens each student’s Jewish identity – in a non-prescriptive way. The organization derives most of its revenue from fundraising activity and the success of the Development Manager is material to the quality and magnitude of the opportunities available to the students we serve.

The development manager will report to the Executive Director. Preference will be given to applicants who live in the DC Metro area or Baltimore.  Will also consider remote work from the NY metro area with willingness to travel monthly to College Park, MD.

Maryland Hillel draws students to the University of Maryland from around the country with large contingents from Maryland, the tristate area, Florida and California. Following many years of growth, Hillel is conducting a capital campaign to construct a custom-built 38,000 square foot Jewish student center to continue to support this thriving Jewish community into the future.

Areas of Responsibility: 

What You Will Do

The Development Manager marshals the efforts of the board, volunteers, and professional staff to drive Hillel’s annual campaign and support the efforts of the capital campaign. Each year, Maryland Hillel raises some $1,000,000 in private philanthropy and a further $400,000-$600,000 in grants. The organization has surpassed $12 million towards its capital campaign goal of $20,000,000 which will realize a brand-new building ( www.maryland hillel campaign.org ). The role includes the following elements:

Development Strategy & Management

  1. Exercise daily oversight of progress towards fundraising goals with a keen eye to LYBUNTS and parents of first-year students
  2. Develop moves management strategies for major donors
  3. Report to key stakeholders on fundraising results to date and anticipated year-end outcomes.

Board & Volunteer Management

  1. Convene and manage the Development Committee of the Board of Directors
  2. Assist the Jewish Terrapin Alumni Network
  3. Cultivate parent leadership to serve on the Parent Council
  4. Assist in identifying prospective board members

Mass Solicitation & Communication

Together with the campus development and communications manager:

  • Prepare and disseminate monthly parent and alumni communications
  • Plan and execute several days of giving: Giving Tuesday, Big10 Challenge, UMD Giving Day, and Hillel Global Giving Week
  • Creatively deploy a mix of mass-solicitation tools like email, text messaging, social media, snail mail campaigns
  • Choreograph the organization’s annual report

Donor, Stakeholder and Grant Management

  • Ensure other key stakeholders are managing their assigned prospects
  • Represent the organization to the University of Maryland – particularly University Relations.
  • Prepare grant proposals and reports for individual donors, philanthropic foundations, and other funders

Data Management

  • Ensure donor data and interactions are accurately captured in the Salesforce database
  • Work with the finance team to ascertain congruous record keeping across the development and financial operations
  • Conduct research on donor prospects
  • Systematically manage lists for special attention by members of the board, development committee and executive director

Event Management

  • Coordinate Hillel’s annual Parents’ Weekend for some 250 families
  • Convene parlor meeting, breakfasts and other niche events as needed
  • Host virtual gatherings for those seeking to learn more about Hillel
Skills/Experience: 

Your Qualifications Include

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3-5 years of fundraising experience 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication ability
  • Proficient in Excel and Microsoft suite
  • Experience with CRM and data management
  • Conversant in Jewish history, tradition and religious practice.
Compensation/Benefits: 

What You Will Receive 

  • Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. Salary of $60,000-$75,000 commensurate with experience.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, Group Supplemental Retirement Annuity (GSRA), retirement plan, life insurance, Long Term Disability (LTD), Flexible Spending Plan, generous vacation/sick time, and parental leave.
